Guest Review: 'Ama 'Ama Lunch at Disney's ... - The Disney Food Blog
Aloha to guest author Anderson Dun! A native of Hawai?i currently living in Arizona, he brings us a delicious review of ?Ama ?Ama at Disney?s Aulani Resort in Hawai?i. Let?s hear it from an expert!
While I didn?t have a chance to stay there, I just knew that I had to visit the Disney resort and have a meal there during my trip home to Hawai?i. I thought about eating at Makahiki buffet, but after reading some good reviews of lunch at ?Ama ?Ama, I decided to try it out.

Pre-Lunch Visit to Off the Hook Pool Bar
When we first arrived at 11:10 AM, my mom and I were told that they were closed and didn?t have any openings until 12:45 PM. I was a bit surprised, but we took the time to wander about the resort.
The first thing we did was head next door to the Off the Hook Pool Bar. The pool bar is right next to the restaurant and offers food and drinks, but of course, we were just there for the drinks.
It is a little thatched roofed, open air hut with a good number of seats and tables.

My mom decided on the ?Alaea-rita and really enjoyed it. I had a taste of it as well, and thought it was very refreshing. ?Alaea refers to the pink sea salt used to rim the glass. Other than that, it was really your standard margarita.

I decided on the Liliko?i Mojito. Let me preface this by saying that I rarely drink alcohol, but decided to try it. For me, it tasted a bit too strongly of rum. It was sweet, but I couldn?t really detect very much Liliko?i, or even lime or mint for that matter. The drinks will run you $9 to $10.

Even with tons of kids splashing around, it was still quite relaxing to be able to sit poolside with a drink. (Although I?ll admit that all I wanted to do was to jump in that pool. Maybe someday?)

After doing some shopping at the gift store and meandering about the resort property, we headed back to ?Ama?Ama at around 12:15 to see if they could seat us. Fortunately, they were able to take us to a table right away.

Unlike the rest of Aulani, some of which I find to be fun but over-the-top, the restaurant is decorated minimally. The design is another open-air, thatched-roof hut, while the blue murals on the walls mimic the ocean. I found the entire setting calm and relaxing.

Of course, it?s really all about the view. Now, while it is beach side, the restaurant is not right next to the ocean?s edge. But who cares? The view of the beach is amazing.

One of the reasons that I decided to eat lunch here was because the prices were much more affordable than dinner. Not cheap, mind you, but still reasonable for a nice resort/hotel restaurant.

I will say that the service was wonderful and attentive ? that is, until dessert. Then it seemed like they stopped paying attention to us, taking a good amount of time for us to get refills and the check. Still, they were very friendly.
My mom and I decided to share an appetizer and chose the Crispy Curried Chicken Firecracker with Mango Gastrique. When it came out, we were surprised to see it was sort of like a coconut chicken curry spring roll. It was absolutely delicious. The chicken filling was flavorful while the mango gastrique served as a nice counter to the slight spiciness.

For my entree, I ordered the Kalua-roasted Pulled Pork Sandwich. ?Kalua? means ?the pit,? referring to the method by which pork was traditionally cooked.
Now, having had lots of kalua pig when I grew up in Hawai?i, I can say that this pork was good, not great. It was a bit under-seasoned for my taste; however, what made the dish great were the Chinese steamed buns and the different toppings for each little slider.
From left to right, the tiny buns were topped with pickled onions, kim chee, and chopped lomi tomato (?lomi? means massage, so the tomatoes are ?massaged,? or rather, chopped finely with onions). They each provided a nice surprise to accompany the roast pork flavor. The sweet potato fries were also very good.

My mom ordered the Ahi Nicoise Salad. She said the salad was ?so good,? in her own words. She especially loved the tuna, even though she rarely eats rare seared tuna ? she usually eats it completely raw or completely cooked from the can. I didn?t try any of her salad, but it seriously looked fresh and appetizing, and I don?t even eat fish!

After our entrees, we had saved room for dessert. Well, to be honest, we ALWAYS have room for dessert.
Though we were intrigued by the Floating Island, we opted for the Chocolate Cake. The presentation was absolutely beautiful, and this was delicious.
I guess I?m not used to fancy desserts, because this was more like a thick mousse in the shape of a cake. But the coffee cream perfectly complimented the chocolate flavor.

Overall
Every time I visit home in Hawai?i, I make a list of favorite places that I must eat?local Hawai?i food that I can?t find anywhere else. And even with the many great meals at my old favorites, my lunch at ?Ama?Ama still was one of the most memorable meals. In fact, it was probably one of the best Disney Dining Experiences I have ever had. (It helped that my mom footed the bill, too).
The food and the view were great, each with the perfect touch of Hawaii. The price was not too bad for lunch, either. Next time I visit Hawai?i, I definitely plan on adding ?Ama?Ama to my list.
And seriously, just look at that view.

Q: Do you think the Blue Jays can ever become contenders if they rely solely on their farm system to develop major-league-caliber players, rather than go after free agents?

A: The Jays very well could be contenders this year ? especially if the two-wildcards-per-league plan is implemented. And if they were in any other division except the AL East, they could have made the playoffs already. So, the quick answer to your question is 'absolutely'.
For those who don't know, Alex Anthopoulos quickly is developing into one the game's best general managers. He has accumulated a young-and-talented big-league roster while clearing the albatross contracts of Vernon Wells and Alex Rios, and the Jays also have one of the elite minor-league systems in the game.
Around Jose Bautista, there is a nucleus of young hitters with upside, led by third baseman Brett Lawrie, who should break out in his first full big-league season. The Jays finished sixth in the majors in runs scored and 10th in slugging percentage in 2011, and this projected lineup should top that: SS Yunel Escobar, 3B Brett Lawrie, RF Jose Bautista, 1B Adam Lind, DH Edwin Encarnacion, CF Colby Rasmus, LF Eric Thames/Travis Snider, C J.P. Arencibia, 2B Kelly Johnson.
The back end of the bullpen ? an Achilles' heel in last season's 81-81 finish ? has been significantly upgraded with the additions of emerging closer Sergio Santos, Francisco Cordero, Jason Frasor and Darren Oliver.
What the Jays need this season is another starting pitcher ? maybe control artist Henderson Alvarez? ? to emerge behind Ricky Romero and Brandon Morrow.
Anthopoulos' dealings actually have lowered the payroll from a peak of just under $100 million in 2008 to a projected $85 million this season ? but he wasn't able to land any of the off-season's top free agents. So that will have to wait until 2013.
But it's not hard to see the Jays being one of the game's top-10 franchises again in the very near future.
Q: Do you think Justin Verlander can continue to handle the heavy workload in 2012 that won him the AL MVP? Or will it just set him up for injury?

A: Throwing an MLB-leading 3,941 pitches year after year ? as Verlander did in 2011, not counting the playoffs ? probably isn't the best way to stay 100 percent healthy.
But the Tigers know that, of course, and as competitive as Verlander is, I can see them taking more opportunities to limit his innings and pitch counts a bit, if they deem it necessary.Verlander just turned 29, and he has been as durable a starting pitcher as there is in MLB. He has made between 30 and 35 starts in all six of his full big-league seasons, and has averaged 238 innings in the last three seasons ? 240 in 2009, 224 in 2010 and 251 in 2011 ? with no time on the disabled list.
So at this point, there doesn't appear to be any need for alarm, or dramatic reductions in his workload. Just the usual caution teams use with their franchise arm.
Q: You recommended moving in the fences at Safeco, or the Mariners never would attract hitters. Petco is in the same boat, but the Padres are trying to tailor their team to fit the ballpark. Is it safe to say you think that attempt is doomed?

A: My point with the Mariners was that they have to rely on drafting and developing their own hitters, or trade for them in lieu of free-agent signings ? but that doesn't necessarily doom the franchise.
After all, the M's did make back-to-back ALCS appearances in the first two full seasons in Safeco Field ? 2000 and 2001 ? and won 91, 116, 93 and 93 games in the first four seasons there.
But it's obviously tough to attract free-agent hitters to play 81 games in Safeco, and moving in the fences could mitigate that. When your offense ? with the benefit of the DH ? scores fewer runs than every National League team, something is very wrong.
The Tigers moved in the fences at Comerica Park, and the Mets are doing so at Citi Field, so there is precedent.
As you mention, it's the same story in Petco Park, and it reached a nadir last season, when Ryan Ludwick's 11 homers led the team. That's just not right. Carlos Quentin and Yonder Alonso will help in that department, but the ballpark has so much to do with it.
But tailoring your team strictly for your home ballpark can backfire when the team takes to the road. The Rockies fought this battle for years, when they had wide home/road record discrepancies before they started storing balls in the humidor to mitigate the offense-friendly conditions at Coors Field.
The old Red Sox teams also struggled with this, as they constructed slugging lineups that were dangerous in Fenway Park, but were hindered in the bigger road ballparks by a lack of speed and defense.

Led by a victory by sophomore Julian Smith (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) in the 60m dash, the Valparaiso men's track and field team competed in its final meet before the league championship meet on Saturday, taking part in the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.
Smith was just the fifth-fastest qualifier into the event finals in the 60m dash, but once there, edged out Purdue's Mario Cosey by one-hundredth of a second, earning the event win with a time of 7.00 seconds flat. The sophomore also posted a fifth-place finish in the long jump on Saturday, leaping 21'6?.
The Crusaders' underclassmen led the way on the track on Saturday. In addition to Smith, freshman Eric Loria (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) also posted a top-five effort, running to a fourth-place finish in the 800m run with a time of 2:02.57. Freshman Ricky Laskowski (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) led the Valpo contingent in the 200m dash with a seventh-place finish, crossing the line in 23.52 seconds.
Sophomore Joe Holy (Bolingbrook, Ill./Joliet Catholic) paced the Crusaders in the 400m dash, crossing the line in 53.06 seconds, good for eighth place. Former NASA administrator Mike Griffin and Scott Pace, both aerospace advisors for the Mitt Romney for president campaign, wrote an article in Space News critiquing the fuel depot idea. Both do believe that a fuel depot supplied from lunar ice would make sense, because of the moon's lower gravity.
How would an L2 space station be built?
Modules for the space station, either based on hard skinned International Space Station Modules and/or with inflatable modules being developed by Bigelow Aerospace for a proposed private space station, would be lifted to L2 with the heavy lift space launch system, They would likely be assembled in low Earth orbit and then boosted to the L2 point, likely with an electric ion rocket tug. WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? General Electric Co plans to hire 5,000 U.S. military veterans over the next five years and to invest $580 million to expand its aviation footprint in the United States this year.
The largest U.S. conglomerate unveiled the moves ahead of a four-day meeting it is convening in Washington starting on Monday to focus on boosting the U.S. economy, which has been slow to recover from a brutal 2007-2009 recession.
"We should have the confidence to act and to restore American competitiveness," Chief Executive Jeff Immelt, a top adviser on jobs and the economy to President Barack Obama, said in a statement.
The U.S. unemployment rate -- seen as the main barrier to a move vibrant recovery -- fell to a near three-year low of 8.3 percent in January, helped in part by the manufacturing sector adding about 50,000 workers. Even with that improvement, 23.8 million Americans remain out of work or underemployed, which is keeping the economy a key issue heading into November's presidential elections.
The world's largest maker of jet engines plans this year to open three new U.S. aviation plants, in Ellisville, Mississippi; Auburn, Alabama, and Dayton, Ohio. After cutting headcount significantly during the recession -- as did its major peers including United Technologies Corp and Caterpillar Inc -- GE has added about 9,000 U.S. workers since 2009, and has already announced plans to hire another 4,500 people.
The Fairfield, Connecticut-based company, whose operations range from making loans to mid-sized businesses to manufacturing railroad locomotives, plans to discuss these moves at the Washington meeting. Boeing Co CEO James McNerney and Dow Chemical Co CEO Andrew Liveris are also scheduled to speak.

A new study has shown that boosting the estrogen levels of male garter snakes causes them to secrete the same pheromones that females use to attract suitors, and turned the males into just about the sexiest snake in the neighborhood ? attracting dozens of other males eager to mate.
This experiment in the famed garter snake caverns of Manitoba, Canada, was one of the first in a field setting to ever quantify the effects of estrogen as a stimulant of pheromones, scientists said, in research just published in the Journal of Experimental Biology.
This estrogen, they said, is the same exact chemical found in many animal species, ranging from snakes to amphibians, fish, mammals and humans. The research confirms once again the unusually powerful role that estrogen can play in biology, and is also relevant to widespread concern about the environmental impact of compounds that mimic the effect of estrogen, found in some chemicals and pesticides.
In this study, male snakes were implanted with a small capsule that raised their estrogen level to about that of female snakes. After one year of this estrogen supplementation, the male snakes exuded a pheromone that caused other males to swarm to them and form the writhing "mating balls" that this species of garter snake is known for.
And just as the pheromone production could be stimulated, it could be taken away, the scientists found. When the supplementation was removed for a year, the males reverted to normal function and behavior.
"We thought this might work, but we we're surprised the results were so compelling," said Robert Mason, a professor of zoology and one of the world's leading experts on reptilian pheromones. "The amount of estrogen the male snakes received was nothing unusual, just about what a normal female would produce.
"And this was not just some laboratory test," he said. "These snakes were trying to mate in a natural outdoor environment, in which the males were absolutely sure they had identified a female snake."
The red-sided garter snake studied in this research depends totally upon pheromones for males to be attracted to and identify female snakes, by actually licking the female with a quick flick of their tongue. But the chemical cues are so extraordinary that in an instant, from one lick, the male can determine the species, sex, population, season, reproductive condition, size and age of its possible partner.
Pheromones are chemical cues that can provide a range of information, and often play a critical role in sexual attraction and reproduction. Snakes are a good model for studying them, Mason said, because they are totally dependent upon them for reproduction.
In garter snakes, the experiments showed just how powerful the mechanism is. Large and older females, preferred by male snakes because they can produce more babies, also have a slightly different chemical signature in their pheromone. Young, small, females can still attract suitors, but not as readily.
When male snakes had their estrogen levels elevated, their pheromone production was so strong that other male snakes actually preferred them to small female snakes.
Snakes use a "vomeronasal" organ in the upper palate of their mouth that plays a key role in this sensing process. Other animals, such as dogs, also have keen vomeronasal sensing abilities. Humans still have this organ, but it's unclear what role, if any, it plays in human sensory ability, Mason said.
The area where this research was done is a natural wonder, many scientists say, attracting hordes of tourists. Each spring, tens of thousands of snakes emerge from limestone caves north of Manitoba, Canada, in an intense competition to mate. Female snakes are swarmed as they emerge from the caves by multiple males that form large, twisting balls, attempting to be the first to mate with the female.After that, a different pheromone is emitted which confirms the mating has been accomplished, and the other males lose interest and leave.

Will NCLB rebound, or is this the first step towards the end?

One has to assume that granting a waiver to 10 states may create a precedent that is quickly followed by others. If a majority of states are granted waivers, it may signal the inability of NCLB to hold schools accountable. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan can talk tough by suggesting that other states will be held to the expectations of NCLB. However, his statement that "it is the law of the land," may ring hollow if other states play an educational game of follow-the-leader.

Of course, much of the criticism centers on the standardized test and the concern that educators are "teaching to the test." Concerns about standardized tests are not new. In the past, standardized tests have been accused of only being accessible to certain types of learners, or to particular racial or socioeconomic groups. Some of this may be true, but the problem remains that the United States might not have a better solution. If the standardized test dies a slow death, it may not be long before people start complaining about the varied educational standards across the country. This could revive the demand for a universal measure of educational outcomes. As noted by the Washington Post, the Education Department may be "obsessed" with test scores, but we are a world of quantitative measures. Qualitative data is much more interesting, but it is also much more difficult to gather and analyze.
The future of government regulations
Perhaps this decision will not weaken NCLB, and will simply be a way to allow schools a bit more time to meet the standards. I do think it is possible that states will continue to push back the deadlines to the point where the legislation is rendered useless. There are plenty of teachers and schools that are working hard, but there are also districts that are not willing to make the necessary changes needed to raise standards. Too many teachers are more concerned with job security than they are with pushing themselves to work harder in the classroom. In addition, America is very much in love with their outdated educational calendar that includes summer vacation. Finally, educational performance is impacted by much more than just the quality of the school. The breakdown of the family unit, as well as socioeconomic disparity may play an even bigger role in the struggles of the American school system.
NCLB may need some tweaks, but the reality is that it is supposed to be hard.
