Burlington's Youthful Mayor-Elect Savors Landslide Victory

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Miro Weinberger, the incoming mayor of Vermont's largest city bounced from one stop to another the morning after his lopsided victory Tuesday night.

Weinberger, 42, was dragging a bit, acknowledging a raucous election night party that allowed for only three hours of sleep.

And then a slew of media interviews began.

"It's exciting, it's satisfying. it's also, um, humbling," Weinberger told NewsChannel Five in a stop at the Chubby Muffin Cafe, "it's a real sense we have big important work ahead."

Weinberger said he felt a surge in support in the closing days of the campaign -- and thanked Burlingtonians of all stripes for the win.

He defeated Republican City Councilor Kurt Wright in five of the city's seven wards -- producing a 2,000 vote victory Weinberger called a 'clear mandate for change'.

The new mayor will be sworn in April 2. He said the first priority would be to draft a balanced budget in the first days of the administration.

"It'll be very difficult to make progress on other issues until there's a sense of confidence and trust, and the city's finances are stable," Weinberger said.

He said he expects to announce transition details next week.

Five Myths About Colorectal Cancer ? CBS St. Louis

In many cases, colorectal cancer can be prevented. Still, it?s one of the 5 most common cancers in men and women in the United States. Colorectal cancer is also one of the leading causes of cancer death in the United States. Don?t let these 5 common myths stop you from getting the lifesaving tests you need, when you need them.

Myth: Colorectal cancer is a man?s disease.

Truth: Colorectal cancer is just as common among women as men. Each year, about 150,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and about 50,000 die from the disease.

Myth: Colorectal cancer cannot be prevented.

Truth: In many cases colorectal cancer can be prevented. Colorectal cancer almost always starts with a small growth called a polyp. If the polyp is found early, doctors can remove it and stop colorectal cancer before it starts. These tests can find polyps: double contrast barium enema, flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, or CT colonography (virtual colonoscopy).

To help lower your chances of getting colorectal cancer:

• Get to and stay at a healthy weight.
• Be physically active.
• Eat a diet with a lot of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and less red or processed meat.
• Limit the amount of alcohol you drink.
• Don?t use tobacco in any form.

Myth: African Americans are not at risk for colorectal cancer.

Truth: African-American men and women are diagnosed with and die from colorectal cancer at higher rates than men and women of any other US racial or ethnic group. The reason for this is not yet understood.

Myth: Age doesn?t matter when it comes to getting colorectal cancer.

Truth: More than 90% of all colorectal cancers are found in people who are 50 and older. For this reason, the American Cancer Society recommends you start getting checked for this cancer when you are 50. People who are at a higher risk for colorectal cancer ? such as those who have colon or rectal cancer in their families ? may need to begin testing when they are younger. Ask your doctor when you should start getting tested.

Myth: It?s better not to get tested for colorectal cancer because it?s deadly anyway.

Truth: Colorectal cancer is often highly treatable. If it is found and treated early (while it is small and before it has spread), the 5-year survival rate is about 90%. But because many people are not getting tested, only about 4 out of 10 are diagnosed at this early stage when treatment is most likely to be successful.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A flower company is the seventh advertiser to pull its ads from conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh's radio program in reaction to his derogatory comments about a law student who testified about birth control policy.

ProFlowers said Sunday on its Facebook page that it has suspended advertising on Limbaugh's program because his comments about Georgetown University student Sandra Fluke "went beyond political discourse to a personal attack and do not reflect our values as a company."

The six other advertisers that say they have pulled ads from his show are mortgage lender Quicken Loans, mattress retailers Sleep Train and Sleep Number, software maker Citrix Systems Inc., online data backup service provider Carbonite and online legal document services company LegalZoom.

ProFlowers had said on Twitter that posts it received about Limbaugh's remarks affected its advertising strategy. ProFlowers is an online flower delivery service.

Limbaugh called the 30-year-old Fluke a "slut" and "prostitute" last week after she testified to congressional Democrats in support of national health care policies that would compel employers and other organizations, including her university, to offer group health insurance that covers birth control for women.

He apologized to Fluke on Saturday after being criticized by Republican and Democratic politicians and after several advertisers left the show.

Clear Channel's Premiere Radio Networks Inc. hosts Limbaugh's program, one of the country's most popular talk radio shows. The company is supporting Limbaugh, whose on-air contract with Premiere runs through 2016.

"The contraception debate is one that sparks strong emotion and opinions on both sides of the issue," Premiere Networks said in a statement emailed Sunday by spokeswoman Rachel Nelson. "We respect the right of Mr. Limbaugh, as well as the rights of those who disagree with him, to express those opinions."

Clear Channel Media and Entertainment operates more than 850 radio stations in the U.S., and Premiere says it's the largest radio content provider in the country, syndicating programs to more than 5,000 affiliate stations.

When asked which companies or organizations were the largest advertisers on Limbaugh's show, Nelson said that that information was "proprietary." Nelson declined to say how much revenue the company will lose with the advertiser defections or how much revenue Limbaugh's show brings in.

Clear Channel's parent company was taken private in 2008 by private equity firms Thomas H. Lee Partners and Bain Capital.

Ford Focus gets EPA rating: 105 MPGe, 76-mile range

The EPA has finished its usual gauntlet of tests and has found that this year's Ford Focus Electric is the most efficient five-seater in America. The agency certified that it gets 105 miles to the electric equivalent to the gallon (divided between 110MPGe in the city and 99MPGe on the highway), which is better than Ford's own claim of just 100MPGe. The company's found cause to celebrate the milestone and throw a few jabs at its closest rival, the Nissan Leaf. In fact, you could say that the House that Henry built has a bit of a complex about the leafy EV -- in the press release we've got for you after the break, it mentions the rival vehicle no less than nine times.

Another powerful weather system is moving through the central and eastern U.S., generating more severe weather. NASA created an animation of data from NOAA's GOES-13 satellite that shows the frontal system pushing east as it generated severe weather in Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. At least 12 tornadoes were reported in three states before mid-day on March 2.

NOAA's Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite, GOES-13, captures visible and infrared images of weather over the eastern U.S. every 15 minutes, and has been capturing the movement of the weather system on March 2, 2012. NOAA operates the GOES series of satellites, and NASA's GOES Project, located at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. compiles the images into animations. The GOES visible and infrared data is compiled and then overlayed on a true-color land surface map of the U.S. that was created using data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer instrument that flies on NASA's Aqua and Terra satellites.

The 25 second movie runs from Feb. 29 at 1718 UTC (12:18 p.m. EST) through March 2 at 1740 UTC (12:40 p.m. EST), and shows the progression of the first storm system that generated about 20 tornadoes on February 29 and the second cold front behind it creating the severe weather on March 2.

The Ohio and Tennessee Valleys are under the gun and in a "High Risk" area for severe storms and tornadoes today, March 2 and overnight into March 3. NOAA's National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center issues risk maps. Areas under a moderate risk for severe weather on March 2 include Alabama (which has already reported two tornadoes), central Mississippi, north Georgia, Illinois (has reported one tornado), Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia. The risk for severe thunderstorms extends as far east as the Carolinas.

Twelve possible tornadoes were reported across three states by mid-day. According to the Associated Press, nine tornadoes touched down in Alabama before 1:30 p.m., local time, destroying houses and a jail. Another round of strong to severe storms will be possible in the late afternoon and evening in northern Alabama. In Clinton County, Illinois a tornado was reported to touch down today, according to KMOV-TV. Two more twisters were reported in Tennessee. Eastern Missouri reported strong thunderstorms that dropped quarter-sized hail earlier today. Hail one-half inch in diameter was reported in Allen, Ind.

The National Weather Service has issued a lot of severe weather watches and warnings. All of these areas are under severe thunderstorm watches, some under tornado watches and flash flood watches. West of and behind the front, the Quad cities in Iowa, areas of Illinois and lower Michigan are dealing with a Winter Weather Advisory, and will watch the rain change over to snow.

As the low pressure system and associated cold front push east, National Weather Service in Charleston, West Virginia calls for showers and thunderstorms that could be severe today and tonight, that may include damaging winds and hail. Once the cold front sweeps through the thunderstorm activity will end.
