YouTube streaming Lollapalooza festival for those of us who can't be in Chicago

YouTube is plenty busy with a livestream of the Olympics in HD for Asian and African audiences, but it's keeping tabs on the scene in the states, too. The service is running a free, two-channel webcast of Chicago's Lollapalooza music festival this weekend, which features big-name acts such as Jack White, The Black Keys and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. As you may recall, YouTube also offered a live broadcast of the event last year. Click through to the source link to see who's on stage. Hey, it's not the same as being at Grant Park, but it's probably a lot less sweaty.

(AP) ? Even Prince William and Prince Harry were kept in the dark.

They told the BBC on Friday had no idea that their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, would play a cameo role in the Olympic opening ceremony.

The sedate, octogenarian monarch surprised many Britons by appearing in a film played at the Danny Boyle-directed opener last week.

The short tongue-in-cheek film shows the queen being picked up by James Bond (played by Daniel Craig) at Buckingham Palace before being whisked aboard a helicopter and flown toward the Olympic Stadium.

As the film ended, two people leapt from a helicopter above the stadium, suggesting that the queen herself was floating down to open the games.

An Internet video of the queen-James Bond piece has been widely viewed.

Word in the Hand: Nothing really matters

Today I visited my family home for perhaps the last time.

My mother died nearly five months ago now, peacefully at home and after a long illness, ?and it has taken this long for the initial sense of loss to pass; the paperwork to be processed and the division of belongings, bequests and gifts to be made.

Today I called in to collect the last items before the house goes on sale. Books, pictures, unmatched crockery, glass bowls and vases; holy statues and pictures; the usual accumulation that remains after 48 years of living in the same house. Those items of sentimentality and personal taste that none of us ?wants and no-one can bear to throw away. Indeed it was a dying wish that nothing was thrown away.

My father also died at home, five years ago, and I have to say that I have never gone into the house without being aware of his presence. To the point that sometimes I used to pray for him to go. But the truth is, that my mum didn't want him to go and she certainly outranked me. I was reminded that when they went shopping she would often 'park' my dad in a cafe until she was ready. Perhaps he had been waiting somewhere similar, drinking celestial coffee and slipping a sly smoke, all this time.

Certainly today, as I wandered through the rooms checking drawers and dressers; tops of wardrobes and ?understairs cupboards, I wasn't aware of either of them. After all the prevaricating and putting off of this moment I felt that the family home was an empty house. I wondered if I was doing it right; although I wasn't sure what 'it' was.

Then this line, the last line, ?from 'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen came into my head 'nothing really matters'. And it was quite embarassing really; I mean, we were all Queen fans but 'nothing really matters'? At a time like this?

But it wouldn't go away. ?'Nothing really matters'

I began to realise that it was true. The house was just a house. The family home was the presence of the people and events that has filled it over these last years; good, bad and indifferent. The times we had spent growing up; growing together - and apart - and then together again; the leavings and the coming back. This wasn't in the bricks and mortar - this was a 'no thing' - insubstantial; atmospheric and impossible to pin down to one place. These 'no things' we have already taken as bequests - we all carry with us now; in our own way; in our own lives; in our own family - they are free of the redbrick terraced house in Liverpool.

I have spent years trying to live a life that is not based on possessions and today I really understood.

It really isn't the 'things' - the stuff - that matter. It's the 'no-things' - the 'no-things' really matter. What we do with what our parents taught us; what we taught each other; what we know and what we wish we didn't know. It has all 'left the building' and if it really matters then it will stay wherever it has set up home and it will become part of another legacy.

My mum called me to several death-bed promises; some I have already broken and I think that's ok. At the end she became afraid of that last act of letting go - but now she has gone I don't think she cares about what she thought she cared about. So some of these boxed up items will be going to the charity shops and some will be going to the rubbish tip and a few, a very few, will be going home with me. Not because of a promise but because I have a use for them or I just like them and that will be ok too - because what I will really take; what really matters is 'no-thing'.

Eternal Rest grant unto them, O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen

U.N. sees battle for Aleppo looming

ALEPPO, Syria (Reuters) - A long-expected Syrian army onslaught to drive rebel forces out of Aleppo is imminent, following a military build-up around the country's biggest city, a senior United Nations official said.

President Bashar al-Assad's forces killed more than 80 people in a series of attacks across the country on Friday and late on Thursday, opposition sources said, reporting intensified fighting in several cities.

The violence came within hours of former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan quitting as international peace envoy for Syria and underlined the impotence of mediation efforts in the 17-month-old uprising against Assad.

The fighting has spread to Aleppo from Damascus after a bomb attack on Assad's security headquarters in the capital on July 18, which killed four of the president's senior aides and encouraged rebels to step up hostilities.

The Syrian army has reinforced its positions in and around Aleppo over the past two weeks, while conducting daily artillery and aerial bombardments of rebel forces in the city.

"The focus two weeks ago was on Damascus. The focus is now on Aleppo, where there has been a considerable build-up of military means, and where we have reason to believe that the main battle is about to start," Herve Ladsous, the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, said in New York.

As fighting in Syria worsened, Moscow was reported to be sending three large landing ships to a Russian naval maintenance facility at the Syrian port of Tartus in the Mediterranean.

The naval ships, each carrying up to 120 marines, would reach Tartus in the next few days to resupply the base, Russian news agencies quoted a source in the General Staff as saying.

Russia, a close ally of Assad, had earlier said it was preparing to send marines to Syria in case it needed to protect personnel and remove equipment from the Tartus facility.

Russian airline Aeroflot announced two weeks ago that was stopping its flights to and from Damascus from Monday, citing "low demand". The Foreign Ministry in Moscow has warned Russian citizens not to travel to Syria.

HELICOPTER BOMBARDMENT

Opposition activists said Syrian forces killed at least 50 people during clashes with rebels in the central city of Hama on Thursday, while a helicopter bombardment killed 16 rebels near the southern town of Deraa, where the revolt first broke out.

In Damascus, at least 20 people were killed when security forces fired three mortar rounds at a Palestinian camp that is home to 100,000 refugees, medical sources said. Palestinian leaders in the West Bank and Gaza Strip condemned the attack.

In the northern city of Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub, battles focused on the Hamdeniya area, near a highway from the south which the army could use to bring in reinforcements.

For both rebels and the government, Aleppo with its 2.5 million inhabitants is a major prize that could determine which side emerges dominant in the struggle for Syria.

Rebels said on Friday they had captured a large police station in Aleppo after days of clashes. Rebel commander Abu Zaher said they had taken several police officers prisoner and seized weapons and ammunition.

Internet and telephone networks in Aleppo were cut for the third day, hampering attempts by rebels to coordinate and forcing them to use couriers to deliver orders.

Rebel control in areas around Aleppo is by no means total, with some villages loyal to Assad and others favoring the opposition. Police and soldiers were setting up mobile check points on some main roads leading into the city from the north.

Soldiers were launching rockets at insurgents from time to time from an infantry school north of Aleppo, rebels said.

"FINGER-POINTING"

Annan resigned on Thursday, complaining of "finger-pointing" at the United Nations while the bloodshed in Syria went on.

Annan's mission, centered on a six-point peace plan and an April ceasefire that never took hold, had looked increasingly futile amid the violence in Damascus, Aleppo and elsewhere.

Annan suggested that the continued arming of all sides in the conflict and deadlock at the Security Council had undermined his ability to pursue a diplomatic solution.

"The increasing militarization on the ground and the clear lack of unity in the Security Council, have fundamentally changed the circumstances for the effective exercise of my role," Annan told reporters.

In an editorial published on the Financial Times website, Annan said Russia, China and Iran "must take concerted efforts to persuade Syria's leadership to change course and embrace a political transition" - meaning the departure of Assad.

"It is clear that President Bashar al-Assad must leave office," Annan said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, a strong supporter of Assad, said he regretted Annan's decision to step aside and referred to him as a "brilliant diplomat.

Moscow's U.N. ambassador, Vitaly Churkin, suggested to reporters in New York that Western powers that had opposed "reasonable and balanced proposals" in the Security Council had undermined Annan's peace efforts from the start.

China expressed regret late on Thursday over Annan's resignation and said it was open "towards any proposals that would help promote a political solution to the Syria issue.

The White House pinned the blame squarely on Moscow and Beijing, which together vetoed three resolutions intended to increase the pressure on Assad, thereby undercutting Annan.

Iran blamed "some interfering countries" for the failure of Annan's U.N.-backed peace plan, the state news agency IRNA said.
