Suu Kyi meets Myanmar president

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi held talks with the country's president on Sunday in their first official meeting since she took up her role as a member of parliament.

The democracy champion met Myanmar leader Thein Sein in the capital Naypyidaw early Sunday, according to Zaw Htay of the president's office, who was unable to give details of the subjects under discussion.

He added that Railway Minister Aung Min, a key figure in efforts to resolve the country's ethnic conflicts, was among those present at the talks.

It is the third official meeting between Myanmar's Nobel laureate and the president since Suu Kyi was released from house arrest following a controversial election in November 2010.

A new quasi-civilian government with close links to the former ruling junta has earned plaudits -- and the easing of Western sanctions -- for a series of reforms since taking power last year, including freeing hundreds of political prisoners.

Suu Kyi, who won her seat in April by-elections, has been named as the head of a parliamentary committee on the rule of law as she marks her dramatic transformation from detained dissident to a key figure in the budding reform process.

In her maiden speech to the legislature last month she called for laws to protect the rights of the strife-torn nation's ethnic minorities.

She also warned that the "flames of war are not completely extinguished" in the country, which has seen ongoing fighting in Kachin state in the north that has displaced tens of thousands of people.

Recent clashes between Buddhist ethnic Rakhine and Muslim Rohingya have left dozens dead and tens of thousands homeless in Rakhine state in the west of the country.

Suu Kyi has disappointed some rights campaigners by not offering stronger support to Myanmar's estimated 800,000 Rohingya, described by the United Nations as one of the world's most persecuted minorities.

Myanmar has come under international pressure over the conflict, after the United Nations voiced concerns of a crackdown on Muslims and Human Rights Watch issued a report alleging abuses by security forces in the region.

The government, which denies the rights group's claims, has given the go ahead for Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to deliver aid to affected areas after talks last week, the pan-Islamic body said on Saturday.

WEMBLEY, England (AP) ? Mexico is celebrating its first Olympic gold medal in men's soccer, and Brazil is wondering if it will ever be able to add the title to its long list of triumphs.

Oribe Peralta scored only 29 seconds into the Olympic final at Wembley Stadium and added another goal in the second half to help Mexico upset Brazil 2-1 Saturday.

Peralta took advantage of a mistake by the Brazilian defense in one of the game's first plays and sent a low right-footed shot inside the near post. It was fastest Olympic goal since FIFA began keeping records of the competition in 1976.

The striker added the second with a firm header off a free kick in the 75th. Hulk scored for Brazil in injury time, but Oscar missed a header in the final seconds to waste the last chance for a comeback in front of 86,162 fans.

Brazil was also trying to win its first Olympic gold, which is the only significant trophy the five-time World Cup champions haven't won in soccer. The Brazilians established the London Games as the team's priority this year and arrived as the big favorite after bringing most of its top players for the competition.

As Mexican players jumped up and down at midfield in celebration, the Brazilians dropped to the ground in despair. Neymar, touted as the future of Brazilian soccer, was one of them, sitting stoned-faced. Real Madrid left back Marcelo dropped his head and cried as his teammates came to console him.

Peralta gave Mexico the early lead after Manchester United right back Rafael tried to make a backward pass. Mexico midfielder Javier Aquino intercepted the ball, sending it forward to Peralta just outside the area. With no defenders near him, he calmly sent his shot into the left corner.

FIFA said Peralta's goal was the fastest since the 1976 Montreal Olympics, when football's governing body began keeping records of the competition. The fastest goal in a senior competition was scored by Turkey's Hakan Sukur 11 seconds into a match at the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.

FIFA said the fastest goal in all competitions came from Brazil's Fabinho, who scored in nine seconds in the 2007 Under-17 World Cup in South Korea.

Peralta's second goal came off a firm header from near the penalty spot after a free kick cross by Marco Fabian.

The Mexicans also had a goal by Peralta disallowed for offside in the 69th, and Fabian missed the open net with his header off a corner in the 72nd.

Brazil appeared to be shaken by the early goal and struggled to create scoring opportunities. Neymar started playing better in the second half and helped Brazil push forward, but struggled to get his efforts on target.

Hulk scored the team's only goal with a low shot from inside the area in the first minute of injury time.

Brazil knew that anything but the gold was going to be considered a huge failure. The expectations back home were high and the Olympics were seen as an important test because the majority of the players in London will also likely be in the team trying to lead Brazil to the 2014 World Cup title at home.

It was the team's first Olympic final in men's football since the 1988 Seoul Games, when youngsters Romario and Bebeto ended with the silver. Brazil also lost the final four years earlier at the Los Angeles Games.

TORONTO (AP) - Ivan Nova snapped a five-start winless streak, Casey McGehee hit a three-run home run and the New York Yankees won their fourth straight game Saturday, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 5-2.

Derek Jeter had two hits, boosting his AL-leading total to 150 and joining Hank Aaron as the only players to record 17 straight seasons with at least 150 hits.

Rajai Davis had two hits and scored twice but it wasn't enough as slumping Toronto suffered its fifth consecutive defeat and its 11th loss in 13 games.

Nova came in 0-3 with an 8.36 ERA in five starts since winning at Boston on July 8, but was sharp against an injury-depleted Blue Jays lineup, setting down the first nine batters in order before Davis singled to open the fourth.

Davis took second on a balk and scored on a one-out single by Edwin Encarnacion. A hit batter put Blue Jays at first and second, but Nova escaped further damage by fanning David Cooper and getting Moises Sierra to ground out.

Nova (11-6) allowed two runs and five hits in 7 1-3 innings. He walked one and struck out 10.

David Robertson replaced Nova after Edwin Encarnacion's RBI single in the eighth and got pinch hitter Omar Vizquel to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Rafael Soriano closed it out in the ninth for his 28th save in 30 chances.

New York managed just Jeter's infield single in the first three innings against Blue Jays left-hander Aaron Laffey, but broke through with a four-run fourth, highlighted by McGehee's first home run as a Yankee.

Mark Teixeira scored from second on Jayson Nix's single to left and McGehee followed with a drive into the second deck in left-center. McGehee hit eight home runs with Pittsburgh before being traded to New York last month.

The Yankees tacked on one more in the sixth when McGehee hit a one-out double and scored on Jeter's ground-rule double to right-center.

Laffey (3-3) had won three of his previous five starts but gave up five runs and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings. He walked a season-high four and struck out two.

Plate umpire and crew chief Jim Joyce warned Nova and both benches after Escobar was hit on the left elbow by a pitch in the sixth, the second straight at-bat he was hit. New York's Curtis Granderson was hit by a pitch from Laffey in the second.

Escobar, who suffered a sore left elbow, remained in the game to play defense for the next two innings but was replaced by Vizquel when his spot came up again in the eighth.

NOTES: Blue Jays OF Colby Rasmus was held out of the starting lineup after leaving Friday's game with tightness in his right groin. ... Tibetan exiles are out to support what is believed to be the first Tibetan athlete to compete in the Olympics. The Chinese are supporting her, too.

That's because Qieyang Shenjie was born in Qinghai, a province of China that is also on the Tibetan plateau and part of the region that Tibetan exiles consider to be Tibet.

For Tibetans, it's essentially the first time they've had a sports figure to cheer for at an internatinal event, even though she represents the country they regard as their occupier.

On Constitution Hill, next to Queen Elizabeth II's gardens behind Buckinham Palace, they have hung a banner using her Tibetan name: "You go, girl, Choeyang Kyi! The first ever Tibetan Olympian!!! We Tibetans are with you."

Tibetan fans say they're torn between their pride for her as a Tibetan and their discomfort that she's running in Chinese colors.

"I have really, really mixed feelings about today. I'm cheering her because she is Tibetan," says Dhundup, who like many Tibetans uses only one name. He was born in Tibet but fled when he was a boy.

China invaded Tibet in 1959 amid an aborted uprising, and the Tibetan spiritual leader, The Dalai Lama, fled with thousands of his followers across the Himalayas and into India, creating an exile community that now numbers 150,000 people around the world.
