PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Andy Reid was welcomed back to the sideline with chants of "Andy! Andy! Andy!" and left the field with players swarming him in celebration.

Alex Henery kicked a 51-yard field goal with 12 seconds left to lift the Philadelphia Eagles to a 24-23 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in their preseason opener Thursday night.

After the Steelers went up on Daniel Hrapmann's 42-yarder with 1:57 left, Trent Edwards led the Eagles (No. 8 in the AP Pro32) back on an 11-play drive to set up Henery's kick.

Reid coached the Eagles just two days after his 29-year-old son's funeral. Garrett Reid, the oldest of five children for Andy and Tammy Reid, was found dead Sunday morning in his dorm room at Lehigh University where he was assisting the team's strength and conditioning coach during training camp.

"That stuff is so humbling," Reid said of the warm reception. "I take that as a compliment to my son and family. I appreciate every bit of it. We feel the love. At times like this, it's important."

Reid returned to the Eagles for a walkthrough Wednesday morning, saying it was "the right thing to do" and his son would've wanted him to coach.

Fans who chanted "Fire Andy!" during a lopsided loss to the New England Patriots last November showed their compassionate side.

"That's honestly a blessing for Coach Reid and the fans to support him after the loss he just had; the tragic loss," DeSean Jackson said. "We'll do anything we need to do to support Coach and I want to tell the fans and everybody else that we appreciate them and their support."

Rookie Nick Foles threw two long TD passes to help the Eagles overcome a 13-0 third-quarter deficit.

Ben Roethlisberger was sharp in his only series for the Steelers (No. 7 in the AP Pro32). He led the offense on a 16-play scoring drive in the first game under new offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

Michael Vick's results weren't quite so good.

Vick escaped injury after banging his left thumb on center Jason Kelce's helmet, and took a seat on the bench after the offense went three-and-out in his only two drives.

Vick got hurt on his final throw and was wincing in pain when he came off the field. X-rays on Vick's thumb were negative.

"I heard a pop and I didn't know if it was my thumb or from the collision," Vick said. "I was hoping it wasn't anything severe. I should practice on Saturday."

Reid was standing alone in front of the rest of the team along the sideline when Vick walked over and stood by his coach's side for a moment of silence before the game. The crowd cheered Reid after the short tribute.

Later in the first quarter, a message from Reid thanking fans for their support was shown on the video board. He got a standing ovation from the crowd followed by the chants.

"I just wanted to be there for him," said Vick, who was close with Garrett Reid.

The Eagles wore a "GR" decal on their helmets in honor of Garrett Reid.

The Steelers held a memorial mass for Garrett Reid earlier in the day, and owners Dan and Art Rooney along with general manager Kevin Colbert and coach Mike Tomlin visited with Andy Reid before the game in Philadelphia's locker room.

"I went up to Coach Reid right before the game and just put my arm around him and said I was praying for him," Roethlisberger said. "I let him know we're thinking about him and stuff. I can't imagine what he's going through and the struggle he and his family are going through, but he saw the love that was out there from his team and from his coaches and the fans and the owners."

The Steelers took the opening kickoff and held the ball for 9:48 before Shaun Suisham kicked a 46-yard field goal to put them up 3-0. They converted a third-and-11 and fourth-and-1, and Roethlisberger was 7 of 8 for 49 yards.

Byron Leftwich replaced Roethlisberger and kept the offense rolling against Philadelphia's starting defense.

Leftwich tossed a 2-yard TD pass to Emmanuel Sanders for a 10-0 lead. Jonathan Dwyer had a 33-yard run during the drive, but left the game with an injured shoulder.

Foles connected with Damaris Johnson on a 70-yard TD pass to get the Eagles within 13-7 in the third quarter. He fired a 44-yard TD pass to Mardy Gilyard on his next throw to put Philadelphia ahead 14-13.

But the Steelers answered on the ensuing possession. Jerrod Johnson hit Chris Rainey on a 57-yard catch-and-run TD to give Pittsburgh a 20-14 lead.

Edwards, a veteran longshot to make the roster, guided the Eagles on a 60-yard drive to put them up 21-20. He tossed a 16-yard TD pass to Jamel Hamler with 5:26 left.

"We didn't get the job done," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "When you evaluate from first preseason game perspective, we made a lot of errors. We will deal with it, won't accept it, but deal with it."

The Steelers played for the first time without familiar faces Hines Ward and James Farrior, who both retired in the offseason. Three other stars - linebacker James Harrison, nose tackle Casey Hampton and running back Rashard Mendenhall - sat out with injuries. Steelers fullback David Johnson and tackle Mike Adams left with right knee injuries.

Five starters sat out with injuries for Philadelphia. They were wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, tight end Brent Celek, defensive ends Jason Babin and Trent Cole and safety Nate Allen. Defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins left the game with a right hamstring injury.

Syrian pro-regime TV: Rebels seize 4 employees

BEIRUT (AP) ? Gunmen abducted three Syrian journalists and their driver working for a pro-government TV station while covering violence in a suburb of Damascus, their employer said Saturday. It is the latest attack on pro-regime media and the latest kidnapping blamed on rebels in Syria's escalating civil war.

Imad Sarah, who is general manager of Al-Ikhbariya station, says that the four were seized Friday in al-Tal suburb north of Damascus by an armed group while they were covering violence in the area. The station blamed "terrorists" and said efforts were under way to release them.

Syrian authorities routinely refer to Syrian rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad's regime as terrorists.

Rebels deny they target the media and have not claimed responsibility for any of the attacks. But they say pro-government media outlets are a legitimate target as mouthpieces of the Syrian regime. The rebel movement is highly splintered and different groups may have different standards as to whom they consider a valid target.

Fighters from the Free Syrian Army are known to be active in al-Tal and other Damascus suburbs that have witnessed fierce clashes between the two sides on almost daily basis in recent weeks. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least six people were killed Friday in heavy shelling on al-Tall, causing many residents to flee the area.

The group, which relies on a network of activists on the ground in Syria, said rebels targeted a tank during the clashes in al-Tal, setting it on fire. The report could not be independently confirmed.

Kidnappings have become increasingly common as the civil war escalates in Syria.

Syrian rebels last week intercepted a bus carrying 48 Iranians in a Damascus suburb and seized them. Rebels claimed the men are military personnel, including some members of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard, who were on a "reconnaissance mission" to help Assad's crackdown.

Iran, however, says the 48 were pilgrims visiting a Shiite shrine in Damascus.

The overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim rebels have also seized 11 Lebanese Shiite pilgrims who have been held in northern Syria since May.

Al-Ikhbariya is privately-owned but strongly supports Assad's regime. Pro-government journalists have been attacked on several previous occasions during the country's 17-month uprising.

In June, gunmen raided Al-Ikhbariya's headquarters south of Damascus, killing seven employees. In a separate incident, a reporter and a cameraman for the station were wounded when bullets hit their car while covering violence in central Syria.

On Tuesday, a bomb blast ripped through the headquarters of Syrian state TV in Damascus, wounding several employees and causing heavy material damage.

Are We Our Parents' Keeper? Elder care, end of life issues and more ...

Inside Feldheim is honored to interview Rabbi Reuven Becker, ?author of the new groundbreaking book You Are Your Parents? Keeper which is fast becoming an indispensable guide relating to elder care and the mitzvah of honoring parents. By addressing delicate issues such as caring for frail and elderly parents, end of life care, mourning and much more Rabbi Becker has brought an?important?new resource to the Jewish community.

Rabbi Becker, please tell us about your professional background in the field of elder care.

I have been involved with elder care since 1972, when I was recruited to join the administrative team of a 527 bed geriatric Center. Equipped with an MBA, MS and Rabbinic ordination, I became the point person for addressing and resolving family complaints and concerns regarding all aspects of service delivery.

At this and subsequent appointments I was responsible for organizational management, development, state surveys, regulatory compliance, and the clinical programs. ?A veteran caregiver ? I served as the primary family caregiver for each of my parents over a period of twelve years ? ?my background includes the design and development of Jewish hospice programming, quality assurance of long-term care services, graduate student training in geriatrics and research presentations in the field of gerontology at national professional scientific conferences.

In 1999 I founded L?Orech Yomim/Center for Healthy Living, Inc. to service the needs of the Orthodox Jewish Community. Its landmark ?Caring for Our Elders? seminar series, integrating rabbinic and professional expertise has earned a reputation for excellence. Our first program was entitled ?Choosing a Nursing Home: Cultural Competence, Halachic Issues and Practical Considerations.?? I can recall the expressions of amazement among rabbis, professionals and all attendees that evening, as we looked around the hall and saw the standing room only crowd. We knew something of significance was transpiring.? The model has been replicated nationally

What led you to write this book?

I wrote the book because of a longstanding commitment to mitzvas kibud av v?eim and elder care. This in fact, is my second volume on the subject.? It was spurred by my professional background, the positive feedback from the original work, my personal experiences while caring for my parents, the subsequent availus periods? as well presentations at L?Orech Yomim?s ?Caring for Our Elders? seminar series.

I had experienced all the life cycle events identified in the book, visiting the sick, care management, mourning and the emptiness after a loss, and then.? if only I knew, I would have done it differently?

Just as I had struggled, I knew that the community was struggling with the challenges of fulfilling the mitzvah. I also found that there were deep rooted traditions and practices that were not common knowledge. I was eager to learn their rationale. Learning about them after the fact, when they can longer be performed was disappointing and frustrating.

This book is a collection of hashkafa, kabala, halacha, minhag ? philosophical, theological, and religious practice ? ?which is not typically taught in yeshiva, seminary, or secondary school.

Ultimately, if we know we are ?doing the right thing,? it can be a source of personal strength, satisfaction, growth, and consolation. The objective of this volume is to help foster such feelings.

Who ought to read this book?

I mentioned the title to a friend who told me ?This book is not for me ? I don?t have parents, they are no longer living.?

I would like to think that anyone who has ever had a parent, will benefit from this book. One of the underpinnings of the work is to advance the teachings of our Sages that the mitzvah of kibud av v?eim is very much applicable after a parent?s demise. Indeed, some suggest that it is even greater after death than when they were living. In this regard, I have incorporated primary text from these Masters representing a broad spectrum of tradition, Chasidic, litvish, and musar schools. The original language is accompanied by a translation.

Scholars and laypeople will find the information meaningful. I made special effort to make the presentation clear, simple, and reader friendly. Every point is supported by a primary source. Sources are available on the side margins so that readers do not need to flip pages unnecessarily. Extensive documentation and notes are also provided to allow for additional independent research and study.

How is your book different than other Jewish books that deal with similar issues?

I don?t think anyone has tackled the scope of this subject matter in one volume.

If a reader has a local Rabbi that they consult with ? is it still relevant to read this book?

This is certainly laudable yet the input of scholars familiar with elder care and end of life issues are often still required. Moreover,? ?the value of early selection of and regular consultation with a Rabbi ? one that all family members respect ? cannot be sufficiently underscored. In addition to practical Halachic guidance, it will reduce the risk of family conflict that almost inevitably ensues in the tense and demanding circumstance of caring for a frail parent. Further, your rabbi may not be available at the very moment you need his guidance. It is also very important to learn what the issues are so you will know when it is necessary to call the Rabbi.

What surprised you as you wrote this book? ?

The impact mitzvas kibud av ?v?eim has on family relations in general, eg, child rearing, was not that surprising. Much of the research was also expansive and enjoyable. The one finding that was startling was the Sefer HaChinuch?s explanation of Mitzvas Yibum. It is awesome. The torah encourages a union that heretofore is an erva, forbidden, one may not normally marry a brother?s wife, to facilitate a subsequent progeny who would fulfill the mitzvah of kibud av, for the father that had passed away. This is unquestionably a powerful demonstration of the significance the Torah attributes to kibud av v?eim after a parent?s demise.

It is unclear how the mitzvah of Yibum is connected to kibud av v?eim. Can you clarify?

Gladly. One of the messages the book conveys is that fulfilling the mitzva of kibud av veim after a parent?s death is a fundamental tenet of our tradition. This concept is enveloped in the phrase bera mezake aba- the behavior of children benefit their parents. A number of chapters in the book are dedicated to this theme. With regard to yibum, When the brother is living the tora firmly states, ervas aishes achicho lo segale, Vayikra 18:16. It is prohibited to expose any nakedness of your brother?s wife. However, should a brother die childless, the Torah directs the surviving brother to marry his widow. it becomes a mandate, even a mitzva to do so (Devorim 25:5). The Sefer Hachinuch, known to be a pure ?halachaist? a la the Rambam, not prone to homoletic interpretations, provides the rationale for this change in direction. He states that the very objective of mitzvas yibum is to give the deceased brother the benefit of bera mezake aba. When the children of the new union perform mitzvos, they are not only fulfilling kibud av for the surviving brother, but to an even greater degree they are benefiting the neshama of their mother?s first husband. Perhaps this point can be clarified further by a recent comment made to me. A noted, very well educated rebbitzen,in the midst of reading the book. She expressed great appreciation for the comfort the book was giving her as she had recently lost her mother and was in the twelve months of mourning. She said she had read all books on the topic, but really appreciated the depth of halacha and hadracha she was gaining from it. One example she mentioned was the citation of Harav Chaim Kianovsky who states that every mitzvah a son performs, even if it is not his intention to do so, elevates his parent?s soul.

What are 3 things people can do right now to prepare for dealing with elderly parents?

I would encourage the following three things:

  1. Have a Halachic Advance Directive document completed. This is very important and it is given prominence in the Fundamentals section of the book.
  2. Do not go it alone.? Develop a relationship with a professional, who can be a friend, a volunteer and with a Rabbi for guidance and support. Complications typically occur without much advance notice. It does not have to be formal. So long as you have numbers to call for help when needed.
  3. ?Become familiar with the directive of Rav Moshe Feinstein, z?tl in his Responsa regarding care management of the terminal frail elder patient. It is not that well known, but nonetheless critical. ?I entitle it ?The Overall Guideline,? p33:

?Decisions made at this time will truly determine whether?a patient will indeed live or die.It is therefore imperative to gather and connect with every tolmid chochum feasible and every medical specialist knowledgeable [for input in the decision making process].?

I would add another. 4. Read this book

We recently conducted a national study of Orthodox Jewish caregiving. We found that Orthodox Jewish caregivers felt a greater degree of burden in the role as compared to the general population. While we do our best to encourage caregivers to seek out support and respite to avoid burnout, sometimes they are paralyzed ? feeling entrapped, uncomfortable ? or too busy in their very role for this to occur. It is up to community leadership, rabbis, professionals, friends and neighbors to be proactive and reach out to anyone they know caring for an elder. A Rabbi, Bikur Cholim volunteers, home care agency and nursing home administrators are aware of caregivers in the community who are struggling with the challenges of fulfilling the mitzvah of kibud Av v?eim and other family expectations. Outreach to the unaffiliated has become a popular programming model and outreach to the caregiver is deserving of community attention as well.

Do you think the issues you talk about in your book are more important now than in the past? if so, why? How?

The Holocaust actually has a big impact today on these issues.? One of the tragedies of the Holocaust is the break in the chain of transmission of customs. Many of us, the second generation, did not have the merit to learn these mitzvos from our parents because we did not experience having grandparents.

For example, we, never observed a parent practice the 12 month mourning ritual for their parent. My book is an attempt to research such practices from primary sources and understand their rationale.

End of life care may span a few months, hours, days, or many years. Today, due to advances in medical intervention and to the very existence of a generation of family elders unknown to adult children of the Holocaust, the book?s contents has a broader application than it would have just a few years ago. As we engage in conversations with friends and associates, we learn that the incidence of attending to the needs of a frail parent is no longer an uncommon occurrence.

Another factor that impacts on elder care today, more so than in the past is the likelihood that both husband and wife are working. With work demands greater, there is less time for family in general, let alone for an ailing parent. Such pressures impact on natural human tendencies to want to do good and be helpful. At the same time the halacha requires certain behavior in these circumstances. As Torah observant Jews it is important to learn what is expected of us in these intense times. The book offers such guidance.

The book has writing from a number of prominent Rabbonim ? can you tell us a little about this?

Foremost, it is important to point out that an internationally recognized posek, HaRav HaGaon Noach Isaac Oelbaum shlita, accepted the task of reviewing the halachic content of the book. In fulfilling the objectives of this work, Rabbi Shlomo Brevda, Rabbi Yechezkel Rubin (The Tomashover Rav), Rabbi Yisroel Reisman, Rabbi Noach Isaac Oelbaum, and Rabbi Avraham Schorr contributed essays to provide support, solace and guidance to individuals facing life?s challenges. Rabbi Mordechai Willig provides an understanding of Halachic issues in estate planning and Rabbi Maurice Lamm offers a beautiful description of what it truly means to say kaddish. Both the messages and the messengers are significant. The eminent Rabonim teach us important lessons. Their voices generate substance. Their willingness to contribute to this work in of itself carries a statement. I am honored to serve as a conduit for bringing their messages to the general public. The book includes selections from the Responsa of ?HaGaon HoRav Moshe Sternbuch, shlita, seminal TshuvosV?Hanhogos to strengthen an understanding of the perspectives of our Sages in addressing the challenges of fulfilling the mitzva of kibud av v?aim and elder care.

You added a number of inserts to the book which readers can actually use ? ?what are these?

Every estate planning attorney will include these two documents when advising their clients: The Advance Directive and The Last Will and Testament. The standard forms do not satisfy Halachic guidelines. Because it is so vital to have these forms executed correctly, we have provided acceptable versions to facilitate their use.

Let me end with this anecdote which just happened before this interview:

Just a few hours ago I met with someone who had read the book during shiva and commented to me something I know too well ?I found it very useful. I just wish I had read it earlier when I was caring for my father?.

?

An additional way that aromatherapy oils might be utilized is to function as a bug repellent. We are all acquainted with the utilization of citronella in candles. (AP) ? Who gets thumped by higher taxes in President Barack Obama's health care law? The wealthiest 2 percent of Americans will take the biggest hit, starting next year. And the pain will be shared by some who aren't so well off ? people swept up in a hodgepodge of smaller tax changes that will help finance health coverage for millions in need.

For the vast majority of people, however, the health care law won't mean sending more money to the IRS.

And roughly 20 million people eventually will benefit from tax credits that start in 2014 to help them pay insurance premiums.

The tax increases ? plus a mandate that nearly everyone have health coverage ? are helping make the law an election-year scorcher. Obama is campaigning on the benefits for the uninsured, women and young adults. His rival, Mitt Romney, and Republican lawmakers are vowing to repeal "Obamacare," saying some health care reforms are needed but not at this cost.

Lots of the noise is about the financial consequences for people who decline to get coverage and businesses that don't offer their workers an adequate health plan. Some 4 million individuals without insurance are expected to pay about $55 billion over eight years, according to the Congressional Budget Office's estimates. Employers could be dinged an estimated $106 billion for failing to meet the mandate, which starts in 2014.

But that mandate money, whether it's called taxes or penalties, is overwhelmed by other taxes, fees and shrunken tax breaks in the law. These other levies could top $675 billion over the next 10 years, under the CBO's projections of how much revenue the government would lose if the law were repealed.

The biggest chunk is in new taxes on the nation's top 2 percent of earners ? some $318 billion over a decade.

Other major taxes are aimed at the health care industry, and some of that cost is sure to be passed along to consumers as higher prices.

A rundown of the most significant tax changes ? and who pays:

___

THE 2 PERCENT

Who pays: About 2.5 million households ? individuals making more than $200,000 per year, couples $250,000.

How much: A 0.9 percent Medicare tax on wages above those threshold amounts; an additional 3.8 percent tax on investment income. Should raise $318 billion over 10 years.

The lowdown: Together these are the biggest tax increase in the health care law.

For those wealthy enough to owe it, the 3.8 percent investment tax comes on top of the existing 15 percent capital gains rate, which is set to rise to 20 percent next year unless Congress acts.

Over the years, more and more people will be caught by the new taxes, because the adjusted gross income level that triggers them doesn't rise with inflation.

But fears that the investment tax will land on most folks' home sales seem overblown ? few sellers will be affected. A couple's profit ? not sales price ? of up to $500,000 from the house they've been living in is exempt from taxes; only gains above that amount are taxed.

When: 2013

___

ARTIFICIAL-SUN WORSHIPPERS

Who pays: The 28 million people who visit tanning booths and beds each year ? most of them women under 30, according to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

How much: A 10 percent tax on the price of tanning. Expected to raise $1.5 billion over 10 years.

The lowdown: Tanning salons were singled out because of wide agreement among medical experts that baking under ultraviolet lights increases the risk of skin cancer.

When: Took effect in 2010.

___

THE "CADILLACS" OF COVERAGE

Who pays: Insurance companies or businesses that provide plans with premiums of more than $10,200 per person or $27,500 per family, not including dental or vision coverage. Employees covered by these so-called "Cadillac" benefits probably will feel the pinch.

How much: 40 percent excise tax on any amount of premium that exceeds the threshold. Expected to raise $111 billion over five years.

The lowdown: The majority of health plans aren't affected because they don't cost enough: Workplace family coverage now averages about $15,000, including the portion paid by the employer, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation's survey. But some middle-class workers, especially those with strong union contracts, have health plans that exceed the threshold. Also hit are corporate bigwigs whose employer-paid plans cover virtually all expenses and lots of perks, akin to tax-free income.

Some employees will pay more for their share of insurance costs because the tax will get passed along to them. In other cases, businesses will trim benefits to bring their plans under the tax cutoff. Economists predict that many of the affected workers will get higher pay as a trade-off ? but those raises would be subject to income tax.

The tax will affect more workers as time goes by. It's indexed for inflation, but rising health care prices will probably outpace that.

When: 2018

___

BUSINESSES SET TO BOOM

Who pays: Insurers, drug companies, medical device makers. And some of their customers.

How much: More than $165 billion over 10 years

The lowdown: New taxes and fees target businesses expected to profit as more Americans get insurance. The companies will pass along these expenses as higher prices when they can. Companies that make or import brand-name prescription drugs paid a total of $2.5 billion in 2011, the first year for their fees.

Insurance companies will share in paying an annual fee that starts at $8 billion for the first year.

Companies that make medical equipment sold chiefly through doctors and hospitals, such as pacemakers, artificial hips and coronary stents, will pay a 2.3 percent excise tax on their sales, expected to total $1.7 billion in its first year. The device makers are lobbying for repeal, arguing that some small companies will have to lay off workers and reduce research spending.

When: Began last year for drug companies; starts in 2013 for device makers, 2014 for insurance companies.

___

THRIFTY SAVERS

Who pays: People who set aside tax-free savings to pay for health care.

How much: About $33 billion over 10 years

The lowdown: The law limits annual contributions to medical Flexible Spending Accounts to $2,500; there was no government limit before. Many employers had allowed $5,000 in the accounts, and some even more. But the average contribution was only $1,400 per year, so relatively few workers will be affected. Four in 10 employees have jobs that give them the chance to sign up for these accounts.

Last year, people with FSAs and similar accounts lost the ability to spend the money on over-the-counter medicines not prescribed by doctors.

Also, the penalty increased from 10 percent to 20 percent for money withdrawn for non-medical reasons from Health Savings Accounts, which people use to help pay high insurance deductibles.

When: Contribution limit begins in 2013.

___

TAXPAYERS WHO TAKE WRITE-OFFS

Who pays: People with big medical or dental bills who itemize deductions.

How much: Almost $19 billion over 10 years. Currently, taxpayers have to spend more than 7.5 percent of their adjusted gross income on medical care to qualify for a deduction. The threshold will rise to 10 percent. So a household with income of $50,000 would have to spend $5,000 on health care before deducting amounts above that.

The lowdown: Most Americans don't have enough out-of-pocket expenses, those not paid by insurance, to meet even the lower threshold.

When: 2013 (delayed until 2017 for taxpayers age 65 or over)
