Yemen says 17 soldiers killed in ambush

SANAA (Reuters) - Yemeni military planes on Monday struck at al Qaeda insurgents suspected of carrying out an ambush in which 17 army officers and soldiers were killed, tribal sources said.

The ambush, which took place on Saturday while an army patrol inspected a pipeline in Wadi Obaida area of oil-producing Maarib province, was one of the deadliest attacks by al Qaeda in recent months.

President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi attended the funeral ceremony on Monday for the dead servicemen, who included Major-General Nasser Mahdi Farid, chief of staff for Yemen's central military region, state news agency Saba said.

Government warplanes bombed the gunmen suspected of being behind the attack, tribal sources said. The air strikes started on Sunday and killed four people but it was not immediately clear if the victims were al Qaeda fighters or not.

Repairs have begun on the Maarib oil pipeline and power lines last week after the government reached a deal with tribesmen to stop attacking infrastructure.

Yemen has struggled to restore normality since Hadi took office in February following a year of protests that forced Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down after 33 years in power.

Yemen's stability is a priority for the United States and its Gulf allies because of Yemen's strategic position next to oil exporter Saudi Arabia and shipping lanes, and because it is home to a wing of al Qaeda.

The Yemeni-based Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has mounted operations in Saudi Arabia and attempted attacks against the United States, which has stepped up strikes by drones.

The U.S.-backed military offensive has driven the militants out of areas they seized in the south last year but has not prevented them from launching attacks that have dealt damaging blows to the army and security apparatus.

In June, the commander of military forces in the south of Yemen was killed by a suicide bomber in the port city of Aden.

Terrestrial Hermit Crabs Learning Social Tricks

An anonymous reader writes "When it comes to abandoned snail shells that hermit crabs expropriate as mobile homes, size matters, for room to grow, room for eggs, and protection from predators. UC Berkeley evolutionary biologist Mark Laidre found that terrestrial hermit crabs on the Pacific shore of Costa Rica congregate in aggressive swap meets where one crab is forced from a relatively large shell, whereupon the rest trade up (one loser and multiple winners, pretty good odds). The loser gets the smallest shell, which means likely doom. Laidre and his colleagues note that most hermit crabs live in the ocean, where there are usually enough abandoned shells to go around so most can live, well, hermit-like lives without much interaction with fellow crabs. Not so on land, at least in Costa Rica."

MoPub Drops Its Price For Ad Network Mediation To Zero

mopub logoIt's the one-year anniversary of MoPub's marketplace for real-time bidding on mobile ads,?and the company is celebrating by eliminating the cost for publishers to participate. CEO Jim Payne told me that the company wants to encourage as many publishers to use the MoPub Marketplace as possible. After all, he said real-time bidding is "a better way of doing things," and bringing more ad inventory into the system means MoPub can make more money from advertisers. And yes, some publishers have declined to participate in the marketplace because the current costs are too high. For example, Payne estimated that under MoPub's current pricing structure, a mid-sized publisher seeing 500 million ad impressions a month could end up paying $25,000.

Clearer picture of how assassin bugs evolved: Entomologists reconstruct the evolutionary history

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Assassin bugs, so named because these insects lie in ambush for prey that they attack with speed and precision, are found all over the world. Nearly 140 species of these bugs are blood-sucking; because they can bite humans around the mouth, they are also called kissing bugs. All kissing bugs can spread Chagas disease, a neglected tropical disease that imposes an economic burden on society.

Surprising, then, that scientists' understanding of the evolutionary history of assassin bugs is riddled with difficulty. The data are incomplete. Fossils, which exist for only a few groups of assassin bugs, are young, providing only patchy information on how these bugs evolved.

Now entomologists at the University of California, Riverside have produced a clearer snapshot of the entire evolutionary history of assassin bugs by integrating molecular, paleontological, behavioral and ecological data into their analyses. The result of their painstaking work is a new phylogeny -- the representation of the evolutionary relationships between species -- for assassin bugs. It includes the most number of assassin bugs to date and represents the most number of subfamilies.

"We can now zoom in on specific groups within the phylogeny to examine specific aspects of the evolution of that group," said Christiane Weirauch, an associate professor of entomology who reconstructed the assassin bug phylogeny with her Ph.D. graduate student Wei Song Hwang. "Our phylogeny significantly improves our knowledge about relationships within assassin bugs and will guide future research work in understanding how some of the interesting prey specialization behaviors and prey capture techniques have evolved."

Study results appeared last month in PLoS ONE.

"One significant improvement is the addition of several assassin bug species from the subfamily Reduviinae, the second largest subfamily of assassin bugs," said Hwang, the first author of the research paper. "Previous phylogenies have a very limited representation of Reduviinae, which means the overall interpretation of the phylogeny is of limited value."

Assassin bugs are estimated to have originated during the Middle Jurassic (~178 million years ago), making them a relatively old group of insects. They diversified significantly in the Late Cretaceous (~97 million years ago); indeed, nearly 90 percent of the existing species diversity we see today in assassin bugs started to diversify from this time onwards. The cause of this diversification remains unknown.

Blood-feeding kissing bugs

Weirauch and Hwang also determined that kissing bugs originated just 27-32 million years ago, the previous estimate being 107 million years ago. Mostly found in Central and South America, these bugs have evolved to feed on vertebrate blood -- lizards, birds, opossums, armadillos, bats, etc., and humans -- and can be found in diverse environments, from the Sonoran desert to the Amazon rainforest.

"The previous estimate of 107 million years ago linked the diversification of kissing bugs with the splitting of South America from Antarctica and provided a longer time-span for kissing bugs to speciate and spread across the continent and adapt," Hwang said. "Our research shows that this is not the case. By including more data and improving estimation methods, our younger estimate of 27-32 million years ago matches the time when the hosts, mainly mammals and birds, were diversifying at a rapid rate in South America."

The researchers caution that as natural environments get altered, more kissing bugs may be seen adapting to new environments and hosts rather than going extinct.

"The colonization of human settlements by wild kissing bugs we are witnessing now is thus likely to increase in intensity as more natural environments are replaced by human activities," Hwang said.

With their comprehensive sampling of assassin bugs and large molecular dataset, Weirauch and Hwang also show that the blood-feeding kissing bugs either have a single origin or two separate but close origins. Until now, the possibility of two separate but close origins of kissing bugs had not been hypothesized nor demonstrated.

"The possibility that there are two separate lineages implies that there will be shared traits among the lineages, but also slight differences we need to be aware of when developing different preventative strategies," Hwang explained. "A single origin, on the other hand, means we can expect common traits shared among all kissing bugs that can be targeted for control or monitoring."

Building the Tree of Life

The current research is part of the scientific endeavor to reconstruct the entire Tree of Life -- the biological concept that all living organisms are related and can be traced back to a single ancestor representing the origin of life on Earth.

"Reconstructing a phylogeny, a framework from which we can infer the evolutionary history of any group of organisms, is thus the first step towards understanding how life evolved, how different species relate to one another, how specific traits evolved over time, and why biodiversity occurs the way it does today," Weirauch said.

The study was financially supported by the Partnership for Enhancing Expertise in Taxonomy (PEET) program of the National Science Foundation, the UCR Department of Entomology, a UCR Graduate Division Dissertation Year Program Award and an American Museum of Natural History Collection Study Grant.

Someday that technique that may let children avoid inheriting certain diseases - and give them genes from another woman besides Mom. (AP Photo/Oregon Health & Science University)

(AP) ? Scientists in Oregon have created embryos with genes from one man and two women, using a provocative technique that could someday be used to prevent babies from inheriting certain rare incurable diseases.

The researchers at Oregon Health & Sciences University said they are not using the embryos to produce children, and it is not clear when or even if this technique will be put to use. But it has already stirred a debate over its risks and ethics in Britain, where scientists did similar work a few years ago.

The British experiments, reported in 2008, led to headlines about the possibility someday of babies with three parents. But that's an overstatement. The DNA from the second woman amounts to less than 1 percent of the embryo's genes, and it isn't the sort that makes a child look like Mom or Dad. The procedure is simply a way of replacing some defective genes that sabotage the normal workings of cells.

The British government is asking for public comment on the technology before it decides whether to allow its use in the future. One concern it cites is whether such DNA alteration could be an early step down a slippery slope toward "designer babies" ? ordering up, say, a petite, blue-eyed girl or tall, dark-haired boy.

Questions have also arisen about the safety of the technique, not only for the baby who results from the egg, but also for the child's descendants.

In June, an influential British bioethics group concluded that the technology would be ethical to use if proven safe and effective. An expert panel in Britain said in 2011 that there was no evidence the technology was unsafe but urged further study.

Laurie Zoloth, a bioethicist at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., said in an interview that safety problems might not show up for several generations. She said she hopes the United States will follow Britain's lead in having a wide-ranging discussion of the technology.

While the kind of diseases it seeks to fight can be terrible, "this might not be the best way to address it," Zoloth said.

Over the past few years, scientists have reported that such experiments produced healthy monkeys and that tests in human eggs showed encouraging results. The Oregon scientists reported Wednesday that they have produced about a dozen early human embryos and found the technique is highly effective in replacing DNA.

The genes they want to replace aren't the kind most people think of, which are found in the nucleus of cells and influence traits such as eye color and height. Rather, these genes reside outside the nucleus in energy-producing structures called mitochondria. These genes are passed along only by mothers, not fathers.

About 1 in every 5,000 children inherits a disease caused by defective mitochondrial genes. The defects can cause many rare diseases with a host of symptoms, including strokes, epilepsy, dementia, blindness, deafness, kidney failure and heart disease.

The new technique, if approved someday for routine use, would allow a woman to give birth to a baby who inherits her nucleus DNA but not her mitochondrial DNA. Here's how it would work:

Doctors would need unfertilized eggs from the patient and a healthy donor. They would remove the nucleus DNA from the donor eggs and replace it with nucleus DNA from the patient's eggs. So, they would end up with eggs that have the prospective mother's nucleus DNA, but the donor's healthy mitochondrial DNA.

In a report published online Wednesday by the journal Nature, Shoukhrat Mitalipov and others at OHSU report transplanting nucleus DNA into 64 unfertilized eggs from healthy donors. After fertilization, 13 eggs showed normal development and went on to form early embryos.

The researchers also reported that four monkeys born in 2009 from eggs that had DNA transplants remain healthy, giving some assurance on safety.

Mitalipov said in an interview that the researchers hope to get federal approval to test the procedure in women, but that current restrictions on using federal money on human embryo research stand in the way of such studies.

The research was funded by the university and the Leducq Foundation in Paris.

Dr. Douglass Turnbull of Newcastle University in Britain, whose team has transplanted DNA between eggs using a different technique, called the new research "very important and encouraging" in showing that such transplants could work.

But "clearly, safety is an issue" with either technique if it is applied to humans, he said.

GOP candidates in close races disavow rape remark

(AP) ? Republicans locked in close races ? from Mitt Romney to Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown ? on Wednesday disavowed Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock's comment that when a woman becomes pregnant during a rape, "that's something God intended." Other Republicans also immediately distanced themselves from the tea party-backed Mourdock.

The Republican hopeful told reporters Wednesday that he meant only that God creates life, and that rape is evil. But there was no taking back the remark, which suddenly pushed the issue of rape and abortion back to the political forefront just as Romney and the GOP had cut into President Barack Obama's substantial advantage with female voters. Democrats seized on the comment and called on Romney to withdraw his endorsement for Mourdock and pull his ad now airing in Indiana on behalf of the Senate candidate.

"It is perplexing that he wouldn't demand to have that ad taken down," Obama campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki told reporters.

The campaign said the president found Mourdock's comments "outrageous and demeaning to women" and said the assertions were "a reminder that a Republican Congress working with a Republican President Mitt Romney would feel that women should not be able to make choices about their own health care."

The National Republican Senatorial Committee stood by Mourdock, but GOP Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire canceled a planned trip to campaign with the candidate Wednesday and issued a statement saying she disagreed with him. Rep. Mike Pence, who is running for governor in Indiana, also rejected the comment and urged Mourdock to apologize.

On Tuesday night, Mourdock was asked during the closing minutes of a debate whether abortion should be allowed in cases of rape or incest.

"I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen," Mourdock said.

The state treasurer, who unseated six-term Sen. Richard Lugar in the GOP primary, is locked in a close race with Rep. Joe Donnelly.

After the debate, he sought to clarify his comments, issuing a statement saying, "God creates life, and that was my point. God does not want rape, and by no means was I suggesting that he does. Rape is a horrible thing, and for anyone to twist my words otherwise is absurd and sick."

Mourdock's comment recalled GOP Senate candidate Todd Akin's remark this summer about rape and pregnancy. Akin said in an August interview that women's bodies have ways of preventing pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape." Republicans, led by Romney, called for Akin to abandon the race, but he refused and is pressing ahead against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

It was unclear whether the self-inflicted political wounds by Mourdock and Akin decide their elections on Nov. 6 in Republican-leaning states. But the comments are clearly problematic for candidates like Brown, who is struggling to hold onto his seat against Democrat Elizabeth Warren.

"Scott Brown is pro-choice and does not agree with the views expressed by Richard Mourdock. They do not reflect his thinking at all," Alleigh Marre, a spokeswoman for Brown, said in a statement.

Crews cut another fiber, Lafayette residents lose phone and Internet ...

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Construction crews make a mistake leading to another cut land line in the area, knocking out phones for hundreds of Lafayette residents.

Frontier Communications General Manager Dave Sorg tells News 18 that Wednesday morning, crews working on Concord Road construction accidentally cut a copper land line just north of Brady Lane on Concord.

This is the second cable cut by construction crews in Lafayette in less than three weeks.

Constructions crews accidently cut the land line while installing storm sewer pipes along Concord Road.

Sorg says the copper land line provides both phone and internet service.

Crider & Crider Job Superintendent Darrell Perry says the fiber optic cable was marked but the copper cable wasn't.

"We got a fiber optic in the back that we hand pot-holed for it and hunted for," Perry said. "As we come through there was three old phone wires, four old phone wires all together and there was a 900 pair phone wire that jumped up in the way. It wasn't really located and we got it."

Sorg says roughly 250 residents and businesses around the area of Concord and Brady Lane may be without service until Thursday.

Sorg assured us that Frontier crews are already trying to work on the cut line, and are working to restore service as soon as possible.

We?ll bring you updates as soon as we get them.

Nothing on TV epitomized the social disruptions of the 1970s like The Odd Couple: Two divorced guys move in together (breakdown of the family), date lots of airline stewardesses (the sexual revolution), and fret about their mopey teenage kids (the generation gap). In 40 years? time, any of our spaceship-riding descendants who want to understand our current era should watch Don?t Trust the B___ in Apartment 23 (ABC, Tuesdays at 9:30 ET). The deliciously depraved sitcom, which returns for its second season tonight, reminds viewers that these days a working stiff can?t catch a break: In a world of unpaid internships and crummy coffee-shop jobs, the only way to make it is to scam, cheat, and lie. Better (and more achievable) than career satisfaction: Hanging out with the cool kids.

Those cool kids can be awfully mean, though. Anyone who signs up to be roommates with the mini-skirted menace of the show?s title will discover that Chloe (Krysten Ritter) will steal from her, screw her fianc? on her birthday cake, set her up with a guy without mentioning that he?s her married dad, and generally make life an amazing roller-coaster ride to hell. All those things have happened to June Colburn (Dreama Walker), Chloe?s latest flatmate, a wholesome Midwesterner who moved to New York for a great job on Wall Street on the very day that the company was closed down for bilking its investors. Soon, June found herself a victim of Chloe?s roommate scam: She charms newcomers by boasting about her close personal friendship with Dawson?s Creek alum James Van Der Beek (they used to date, but they weren?t compatible, ?genitally speaking?imagine trying to fit a cucumber into a coin purse?), takes their first and last, sells their possessions, and drives them screaming back to the sticks.

But June scammed the scammer, earning Chloe?s grudging respect. In fact, Chloe likes June so much that she she?s taken her under her wing as a prot?g?e. June is still handing out r?sum?s after working extra shifts at It?s Just Beans. But thanks to nights spent in VIP rooms, at vodka launches, and visiting the Beek on the set of Dancing With the Stars, she?s gradually wising up.

Chloe is a Holly Golightly for the modern era. She isn?t ashamed of the sex tape she made with Van Der Beek back when they were dating??That video of me being rammed by my best friend means the world to me,? she tells June?and she loves being the subject of a series of comic books called Tall Girl, No Panties. She enjoys casual sex, she?s comfortable with her body (Chloe?s naked breakfasts make lots of work for the guy who works ABC?s pixelator), and she turns life into a nonstop, hangover-inducing party. ?Why do you like Chloe so much?? June asks Robin, an earlier victim of the roommate scam who now lives down the hall and is obsessed with Chloe. Robin is blunt: ?She?s pale, popular. She?s got 4 percent body fat ? If I could have one friend like her, everything would be good.?

Chloe really can?t be trusted, though. She has the morals of a pirate, and a bully?s enjoyment of other people?s misery?she?s the kind of person who takes marbles to a runway show just to watch the models fall. (?They?re like giraffes collapsing in the jungle.?) When June decides to sell homemade preserves to pay the rent?a page right out of the 2 Broke Girls? cupcake-making playbook?Chloe secretly turns the process into June?s Jammin? Jams, a fetish video and website, because she knows ?perverts would pay a lot of money to watch us make it.? Sure, the hidden cameras were an invasion of June?s privacy, but Chloe?s right: These days only a fool builds anything more concrete than a website.

Apartment 23?s creator Nahnatchka Khan spent six seasons as a writer and executive producer on the Seth MacFarlane comedy American Dad!, and her animation roots are visible in Don?t Trust the B___.* It?s an odd mix of the hyperreal?especially June?s worries about her stalled career?and surreal. There?s a pervy neighbor who talks to them through the window, characters are constantly interrupting each other?s interior monologues, and the same kind of amnesia that allows the cartoon universe to give a schoolboy a pet elephant liberates Chloe from the tyranny of consequences. A show that stuck to the rules of logic and credibility couldn?t pull off a storyline from Season 1 in which Chloe claimed that she and June were a lesbian couple so that she could get a foster child to act as her personal assistant during her ?busy season? as a nightlife guide during the U.N. General Assembly.

Huffington Post TV critic Maureen Ryan recently suggested that Apartment 23 would work better as an animated show, since ?most of the characters are written as loud, one-dimensional types.? Of course, it isn?t the only TV sitcom to veer into cartoon territory?as I wrote back in March, Fox?s Raising Hope is in many ways a live-action version of The Simpsons?and while I agree with Ryan that Chloe?s ?occasional forays into human compassion seem forced and out of step with every other way she's characterized,? I find the tonal variation refreshing. It?s rare that TV characters can genuinely surprise jaded viewers, but Chloe?s depravity shocks me at least once an episode. And without at least one foot in the real world, James Van Der Beek?s self-satirizing portrayal of preening B-list star James Van Der Beek would land with a thud.

If there?s one built-in limitation to Apartment 23, it?s that Chloe?per the title?must always remain a bitch. But in our kleptocratic, recessionary age, what else could she be?

Correction, Oct. 23, 2012: This piece originally misspelled Nahnatchka Khan?s last name. (Return to the corrected sentence.)

Brain waves reveal video game aptitude

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Scientists report that they can predict who will improve most on an unfamiliar video game by looking at their brain waves.

They describe their findings in a paper in the journal Psychophysiology.

The researchers used electroencephalography (EEG) to peek at electrical activity in the brains of 39 study subjects before they trained on Space Fortress, a video game developed for cognitive research. The subjects whose brain waves oscillated most powerfully in the alpha spectrum (about 10 times per second, or 10 hertz) when measured at the front of the head tended to learn at a faster rate than those whose brain waves oscillated with less power, the researchers found. None of the subjects were daily video game players.

The EEG signal was a robust predictor of improvement on the game, said University of Illinois postdoctoral researcher and Beckman Fellow Kyle Mathewson, who led the research with psychology professors and Beckman Institute faculty members Monica Fabiani and Gabriele Gratton.

"By measuring your brain waves the very first time you play the game, we can predict how fast you'll learn over the next month," Mathewson said. The EEG results predicted about half of the difference in learning speeds between study subjects, he said.

The waves of electrical activity across the brain reflect the communication status of millions or billions neurons, Mathewson said.

"These oscillations are the language of the brain, and different oscillations represent different brain functions," he said.

The researchers also found that learning to play the game improved subjects' reaction time and working memory (the ability to hold a piece of information in mind just until it is needed), skills that are important in everyday life.

"We found that the people who had more alpha waves in response to certain aspects of the game ended up having the best improvement in reaction time and the best improvement in working memory," Mathewson said.

This project is a part of a larger collaborative effort to determine whether measures of brain activity or brain structure can predict one's ability to learn a new video game. One analysis, led by Beckman Institute director Art Kramer (an author on this study as well), found that the volume of specific structures in the brain could predict how well people would perform on Space Fortress. That study used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure the relative sizes of different brain structures.

But MRI is expensive and requires that subjects lie immobile inside a giant magnet, Mathewson said. With EEG, researchers can track brain activity fairly inexpensively while subjects are engaged in a task in a less constricted, less artificial environment, he said.

The new findings offer tantalizing new clues to the mental states that appear to enhance one's ability to perform complex tasks, Mathewson said. Alpha waves are associated with relaxation, but they also are believed to arise when one is actively inhibiting certain cognitive functions in favor of others, he said. It is possible that everyone could benefit from interventions to increase the strength of their alpha waves in the front of the brain, a region associated with decision-making, attention and self-control.

"You can get people to increase their alpha brain waves by giving them some positive feedback," Mathewson said. "And so you could possibly boost this kind of activity before putting them in the game."

The study team also included researchers now at the University of Texas at Dallas and Florida State University.

The U.S. Office of Naval Research, the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and the Beckman Institute supported this research.

Mobile operators need to build online marketplaces | Techzim

Online MarketplaceThere are two main problems facing anyone who wants to conduct business?online, ?namely: Payments and Distribution.

The payment problem

When one needs to make online transactions, they must to have a MasterCard/Visa card or PayPal, or any other method of online payment. ?None of these are easy to come by for the majority of internet users (be it mobile or PC).? Most content publishers also have no way to?receive?payments for their content.

The distribution problem

We lack sufficient means of delivering services to users, e.g. music downloads. Potential customers resort to piracy because they cannot buy the songs they want conveniently. Same applies for apps, e-books and games. ?Content publishers have nowhere to sell their content.

This is where an online marketplace would come handy.

The marketplace

A marketplace is an online store which sells virtual and physical goods, ranging from apps, music files, videos, ringtones, and games amongst other things. Content/goods are provided by third parties but the marketplace is run and controlled by the operator. Well known examples are iTunes, Play Store, Amazon.com and the less known Korea?s SK T-Store.

T-Store is a perfect example of how an operator run marketplace can be a major success. Having spent about a year in South Korea where I got the opportunity to use such a service, I thought I could use the SK Telecom?s T-Store as an example of a successful implementation of a marketplace by a mobile operator.

It is owned by South Korean Telecoms operator SK Telecom, it was launched in 2009 and has already had 7 million users, 24,000 partners and 220 million app downloads since?September?2009. It is an online?marketplace?for smartphone applications,? music, comics,?ebooks, movies and other virtual content.
MintMarketOther online?businesses?that SK Telecom operates are?MintMarket?- a mobile marketplace for second hand items in mint condition, and?11th Street - an online auction and shopping site.

The technology sector is a place where only those continually seeking change and innovation can survive and thrive. MNOs need to find new ways to expand their businesses beyond the current paradigms, find new ways to generate revenue and explore new areas where they can succeed.

Given the aforementioned obstacles (payments and distribution), the MNOs would be best suited to deliver a successful online marketplace; they can overcome the logistical problems required in setting up such a marketplace. They already have efficient payment methods; transactions would rely mainly on carrier billing.

Since most of mobile users?don?t?have bank accounts, but can easily get access to airtime. My airtime wallet (E-wallet/ EcoCash / whatever they want to call it) could be linked to the hypothetical E-Store (Econet Store).

I?m using Econet as the archtype in my hypothesis, mainly because it has the majority of the local subscriber base and Econet is on the right path with EcoCash, it has the potential to morph into something much bigger than its current form; it could be the spark that ignites Zimbabwean eCommerce and help transform our economy.

On this E-Store I would be able to buy the latest Winky-D or Macheso song or buy a local ebook using my E-wallet. Econet owns the traffic that travels on their network, they would then be able to subsidize downloads of content bought on their Store.

Implementation of an online marketplace could help rejuvenate certain industries in the country such as the music industry which now generates revenue mainly through live performance as opposed to sales. Zimbabwean apps could easily be uploaded to the store and developers could circumvent the tiresome requirements of Google Play Store and Amazon App store. Book publishers could sell their books in a convenient way in one place.

Econet is best suited to lead the way mainly because it has the right telecommunications in place to implement the service. It has a large subscriber base, a payment solution already in place in the form of EcoCash, and the company would?definitely?be able to get adequate funding and expertise required to undertake such a project.

Other MNO?s could definitely get in on the action, they all have?adequate pull to undertake such a project.?This is something that is tremendously needed in the country to stimulate online business.

Apple introduces 'Fusion Drive' as a build-to-order option for the new iMac

Image

So you want the performance of a new-fangled SSD with the extra storage of a good 'ole HDD? Apple has you covered with Fusion Drive for its new iMac. Unlike existing standalone hybrid drives the company is apparently "fusing" together a separate SSD and HDD with custom software in Mountain Lion. Better yet, the OS and all the pre-installed applications live on the SSD by default, while your documents and media reside on the HDD. This sounds similar to the software RAID functionality in OS X, but cranked to the next level. Stay tuned for details as we find out more.

Extreme right strengthens as Greece economy sinks

With the Greek unemployment rate at 25 percent, anti-foreigner sentiment is growing. NBC News' Andy Eckardt meets politician Ilias Panagiotaros of the far-right Golden Dawn party and Ali Rahimi, an Afghan national who was attacked by a mob and told to leave Greece.

By Andy Eckardt, NBC News

ATHENS, Greece -- Ali Rahimi was?enjoying a warm Greek evening, chatting away with two friends, when a mob of 15 people approached and asked where they were from.

"I told them that I am from Afghanistan and they said that it is time for me to go back to my country," the 28-year-old asylum-seeker told NBC News.

Rahimi attempted to run away but was cornered, beaten, hit over the head with a bottle and stabbed in the chest and back by three assailants in the entryway of his Athens apartment building.?

"When police arrived they called an ambulance, but then told me that they could not help me any further and left," Rahimi recalled, explaining how he only realized how serious his injuries were after spotting blood running out from under his T-shirt during the brutal attack on Sept. 17, 2011.

Andy Eckardt / NBC News

Ilias Panagiotaros of Greece's far-right Golden Dawn Party.

Rahimi's case does not appear to be unique. As the euro zone debt crisis leaves Greece grappling with a 25 percent overall unemployment rate, activists say they have noted an increase in the number of hate crimes reported.

'It is virtually impossible to find a job': Brain drain is new Greek tragedy

Far-right populism has also found fertile ground in the near-bankrupt country,?where the economy is forecast to contract by 7 percent this year and every second youth is out of work.

Nazi-style salutes
The Golden Dawn party ? no more than an extremist fringe group when it was established in the late 1980s and which has been branded "neo-Nazi" by its opponents ? has been gaining support amid the country's deteriorating economic situation.

Citing a poll by?VPRC which appeared in the "Ellada Avrio" newspaper on Friday, Reuters reported:

Alkis Konstantinidis / EPA, file

Migrants living in Athens are held during a Police ID-check operation in central Athens, Greece, in this 6 August file picture.

Backing for the ultra-nationalist Golden Dawn, which has been linked to a rise in attacks against migrants in recent months, stood at 14 percent, double their take in June elections that gave the party a foothold in parliament. That would make the group the country's third largest party.

The party's rabidly anti-immigrant message has stuck a chord with many voters as EU/IMF imposed austerity propels unemployment levels to a record 25 percent.

Golden Dawn denies it is neo-Nazi but bears a Swastika-like emblem and its supporters have been seen giving Nazi-style salutes. The party's leader, Nikolaos Mihaloliakos, has denied the Holocaust occurred while one lawmaker, Eleni Zaroulia, called immigrants "sub-humans" in parliament on Thursday.

Reuters added that the opinion poll showed that "Greeks' frustration with their political leaders has grown as the coalition prepares to push through the new round of austerity measures to appease [foreign] lenders and secure more bailout aid and keep the country afloat."

Over the past decade, Greece has become the major gateway into the European Union for illegal immigrants and asylum-seekers from Asia and Africa.

'Growing despair'
Experts estimate that between 800,000 and 1 million undocumented migrants now live in Greece, a country with a population of nearly 11 million.

"The rapid increase of illegal immigration in the past years, growing despair over the ailing economy and a loss of trust in our political leadership have fueled public anger and given way to dangerous populism in the country," says Loukas Tsoukalis, head of Greek think-tank Eliamep.

Riot police use tear gas and stun grenades in response to fire bombs and bottles thrown by protesters during a demonstration against austerity cuts in Greece. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

Campaigning on a message of ultra-nationalism and fierce anti-immigrant policies, Golden Dawn won 18 seats in parliament during June's national election.

"We have to protect 10 million Greeks that are suffering from the very bad economy and from the killings, rapes, shootings and everything else that all illegal immigrants are doing to this country," Ilias Panagotiaros, a Golden Dawn politician and a member of Greek parliament, told NBC News.

A poll last month found that the popularity of Nikos Mihalolioakos, head of the Golden Dawn party, has climbed to 22 percent, up 8 points from May.

However, it is not just a harsh political message that has been drawing support for Golden Dawn.

In an attempt to build an image of social responsibility, followers of the movement have taken up the roles of what some Greeks call "a crumbling public support system."

'For Greeks only'
Last month, members of Golden Dawn set up booths in a central Athens square to distribute groceries and collect blood donations. "For Greeks only" was the message, after visitors were asked to provide identification of Greek citizenship.

"Golden Dawn has been taking advantage of the growing despair, presents itself as a protector of the weak and vulnerable," analyst Tsoukalis says.?"In dangerous neighborhoods they have offered to escort old ladies to the grocery store around the corner."

Rising political and socio-economic discontent, nurtured by a surge of crime rates in major Greek cities, have also led to widespread public acceptance that followers of Golden Dawn sometimes substitute for police and other government officials.

While Greece gears up for more protests against austerity cuts, the health care system is in tatters with little cash for drugs or doctors. ITV's James Mates reports.

A video shot in early September shows members of Golden Dawn checking work permits at a local market in Rafina, where migrant vendors sell their goods. Minutes later, several people with black Golden Dawn T-shirts and Greek flags moved in and destroyed the stands.

"We are going to defend our country, our history, our religion, our culture," Golden Dawn's Panagiotaros adds. He is also one of the founders of a ultra-nationalistic football fan club called?Galazia Stratia, or Blue Army, that has vowed to "defend Greek national pride inside the stadiums".

Spain's economic crisis turns middle-class families into illegal squatters

"Things are getting worse and worse in Greece. There is no future for the next few years there," says Christos Christoglou, a Greek inspection engineer, who moved to Germany to find work.

In September, Jos? Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission, included a stark warning in his annual 'state of the union' address, saying that the euro crisis was contributing to the rise in extremism.

And in recent months, officials in Athens have vowed to set up a special police force to combat violence against migrants and plan to impose tougher penalties for these type of crimes.

"Something must happen quick," says Judith Sunderland?from Human Rights Watch, who is author of a report called "Hate on the Streets: Xenophobic violence in Greece."??

?Xenophobic hate crimes have reached an alarming proportion in Greece," she added. "Victims are often actively discouraged from filing complaints, told by police officers that it is not worth their while or that they should fight back themselves. And many migrants fear that they could be locked up themselves because of their legal status."

'The country is on its knees': Ireland grapples with economic collapse

Meanwhile, Rahimi is still waiting for justice in the wake of his attack.?The trial has been postponed seven times already in the past year.

"And it remains unclear, whether the prosecutor will argue that the attack had been motivated by racist or xenophobic sentiment," Sunderland told NBC News.

In debt or jobless, many Italians choose suicide

One of the three accused is Themis Skordeli, a female member of Golden Dawn, who failed to get elected to parliament last May.

According to local media reports, Skordeli has been identified as a member of a so called 'anti-migrant patrol group', which was formed to 'work the streets' of poorer Athens' neighborhoods.

Rahimi, who came to Greece in 2005, says that he now rarely leaves his apartment and has become extremely cautious when going out to visit friends.

"I am afraid to live here," he says. "I will wait until the trial is over and then definitely head to another country."
