Verzion drops Motorola Droid Razr to $200, cuts 16GB microSD (Digital Trends)

Motorola?s Droid Razr, one of Verizon?s high-end 4G smartphones, now costs $100 less than it used to ? but those savings come at a price. At the $300 price point, the Droid Razr came with 32GB of internal storage. Now, it?s down to just 16GB, thanks to the removal of an included 16GB microSD card. The $300 package is no longer available.

You might be saying to yourself, OK, but can?t I just pop my own microSD card into the slot? Yes, yes you can. And it will cost you far less than $100. A quick search shows that a 16GB SanDisk microSD card will only run? you about $15 on Amazon. Or you could upgrade to a 32GB card (the maximum storage size allowed by the Razr) for a mere $25 to $30. In other words, those of you who bought the Droid Razr for $300 got ripped off.

Of course, Verizon didn?t just drop the price for nothing. It did so to make room for the upcoming Droid Razr Maxx, which will fill in the $300 price point. This time, however, the premium price just might be worth it. The primary difference between the Droid Razr and the Droid Razr Maxx is greatly improved battery life. Motorola claims that the gigantic 3300mAh battery will last you all day long, with 21.5 hours of talk time, 15 hours of video playback (from local storage), 6 hours of HD video streaming over Verizon?s 4G LTE network, and 10 hours of continuous GPS navigation.

These specs put most other smartphones to shame, especially the early breed of 4G LTE phones, which have notoriously terrible battery life. The sacrifice is a minor increase in thickness ? about 1.9mm, which brings the Droid Razr Maxx?s heft to 9mm. This is noticeably thicker than the ultra-thin Droid Razr, which measures just 7.1mm at its thinnest, but still thinner than the 9.3mm-thick iPhone 4/4S.

Another downside to the Maxx is that it will ship without Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and instead runs on Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread). There is currently no date set for the upgrade to ICS.

The Droid Razr Maxx is expected to hit Verizon in the next couple of weeks. In the mean time, potential customers can decide whether they want to save $100 for a thinner phone, with less-than-stellar battery life, or heave out the extra change for a phone that will last you all day.

*All prices listed here are contingent upon signing a new two-year contract with Verizon.

Syria ready to let monitors stay, rebel seeks U.N. action (Reuters)

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? Syria is ready to let Arab monitors extend their mission beyond this week, an Arab source said on Tuesday, but a rebel army chief said they should go as they had failed to curb a crackdown on protesters seeking President Bashar al-Assad's overthrow.

Damascus opposes broadening the scope of the Arab League observer mission, the source at the League said, but would accept a one-month extension of its mandate which expires on Thursday.

However, Riad al-Asaad, the Turkish-based commander of the rebel Free Syrian Army, called for international intervention to replace the observer team which is monitoring Syria's implementation of a League plan to end 10 months of bloodshed.

U.N. officials say more than 5,000 people have been killed in the violence across Syria and the government says 2,000 members of its security forces have died.

The Arab League must decide whether to withdraw its 165 monitors or keep them in Syria, even though they are expected to report that Damascus has not fully implemented a peace plan agreed on November 2. Arab foreign ministers are set to discuss the team's future on January 22.

"The outcome of the contacts that have taken place over the past week between the Arab League and Syria have affirmed that Syria will not reject the renewal of the Arab monitoring mission for another month ... if the Arab foreign ministers call for this at the coming meeting," the source said.

The Arab plan required Syria to halt the bloodshed, withdraw troops from cities, free detainees, provide access for the monitors and the media and open talks with opposition forces.

"FAILED MONITORS"

Rebel commander Asaad opposed any extension of the mandate.

"The Arab League and their monitors failed in their mission and though we respect and appreciate our Arab brothers for their efforts, we think they are incapable of improving conditions in Syria or resisting this regime," he told Reuters.

"For that reason we call on them to turn the issue over to the U.N. Security Council and we ask that the international community intervene because they are more capable of protecting Syrians at this stage than our Arab brothers," Asaad said.

The source said Beijing and Moscow had urged President Assad to accept an extension of the monitoring mission as a way to avert an escalation at the international level.

Syria would agree to an increase in the number of monitors, he said, but would not allow them to be given formal fact-finding duties or be allowed into "military zones" that are not included in the existing Arab peace plan.

Any change in the scope of the mission, whether to militarize it or let it investigate human rights abuses and potentially assign blame, would require a new agreement with Syria, the source said.

Qatar has proposed sending in Arab troops, a bold idea for the often sluggish League and one likely to be resisted by Arab rulers close to Assad and those worried about unrest at home.

Syria's foreign ministry said on Tuesday it was "astonished" at Qatar's suggestion, which it "absolutely rejected."

AN OLD ALLY

The League could ask the U.N. Security Council to act, but until now opposition from Russia and China has prevented the world body from even criticizing Syria, an old ally of Moscow.

Western diplomats said a Russian draft resolution handed to the council on Monday did not make clear if Moscow would accept tough language demanded by the West.

French Deputy Foreign Ministry spokesman Romain Nadal described Moscow's latest draft as disappointing, saying Paris had proposed constructive amendments to the Russian text.

"After a month of silence a new text has just been submitted by Russia, which still falls far short of responding to the reality in Syria," he said. "We've been saying this for months now: the Security Council's silence is scandalous."

Few Western powers favour any Libyan-style military action in Syria, which lies in the heart of the conflict-prone Middle East. Bordering Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, Iraq and Israel, it is allied to Iran and the armed Lebanese Shi'ite Hezbollah group.

Iran condemned what it called foreign interference in the affairs of its closest Arab ally, Syria, and praised reforms President Assad has promised as "problem-solving."

"We are fundamentally against interfering in the affairs of other countries. We think it does not solve the problems but will only make them more complicated," Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told a news conference.

Assad, while offering reform, has vowed to crush his opponents with an "iron fist," but Syrians braving bullets and torture chambers appear equally determined to add him to the list of the past year's toppled Arab leaders.

Army deserters and other rebels have taken up arms against security forces dominated by Assad's minority Alawite sect, pushing Sunni Muslim-majority Syria closer to civil war.

ROCKETS AND TANK FIRE

Syria's state news agency SANA reported on Tuesday that what it called terrorists had fired rockets, killing an officer and five of his men at a rural checkpoint near Damascus. Seven others were wounded in the incident, a day after gunmen assassinated a brigadier general near the capital.

Eight people were killed when a bomb hit a minibus on the Aleppo-Idlib road, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

In Homs, tank fire crashed into the Khalidiya district after a night rally against Assad there, activists said. YouTube footage showed a crowd dancing at the rally and waving the old Syrian flag used before the Baath Party seized power in 1963.

The British-based Observatory said eight people were killed in violence in Homs, a flashpoint city of one million racked by unrest, crackdowns and Sunni-Alawite sectarian killings.

Activists also reported fighting between rebels and troops trying to edge into Khalidiya, a neighborhood that is home to Sunni tribesmen and lies next to the Alawite district of Nozha.

Tanks were firing sporadically at the rebel-held town of Zabadani, near the Lebanese border, which has been under attack since Friday, activists said. They added that several soldiers who had tried to defect to the opposition had been killed.

Syrian forces shot dead a man at a roadblock in the restive Damascus suburb of Qatana, they said, and an activist was killed by sniper fire in the northwestern town of Khan Sheikhoun.

The United States, the European Union, Turkey and the Arab League have announced sanctions against Syria, but while these have hurt its economy, they have yet to prompt Assad to change course. Opposition to sanctions from some of Syria's trading partners, notably Lebanon and Iraq, also dilutes their impact.

Security Council members have been divided for months over the uprising against Assad, with Western countries pushing for strong condemnation of the government's bloody crackdown but Russia seeking to shield Damascus.

In October, Russia and China vetoed a European-drafted resolution that threatened possible sanctions. Russia presented its own draft on December 15 and Western countries agreed to discuss and negotiate it, but there has been little progress since then.

Some like it hot: Popular yoga style cranks up the heat

ScienceDaily (Jan. 16, 2012) ? Yoga is one of the hottest fitness trends and a style known as "hot yoga" is gaining in popularity.

Hot yoga refers to yoga practiced in a heated environment, with the room temperature generally reaching 90 to 105 degrees. The theory behind it is that hot yoga helps the body to sweat out toxins while allowing the practitioner to safely achieve deeper poses. Bikram is a common form of hot yoga.

Almost 16 million Americans practice some form of yoga, according to a 2008 study in the Yoga Journal.

While the practice can offer health benefits and a sense of well-being, people practicing hot yoga, especially beginners, should take certain precautions, according to Diana Zotos, a certified yoga instructor and physical therapist in the Rehabilitation Department at Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

"Yoga of any type is physically challenging, and the heated environment of hot yoga makes the practice especially demanding," Zotos says. "The heat makes people feel as if they can stretch deeper into poses and can give them a false sense of flexibility. This can lead to muscle strains or damage to the joint, including ligaments and cartilage."

Zotos says people over 40 who have never done Bikram yoga may be at greater risk of injury, and she recommends they familiarize themselves with it prior to trying a class. "There are many books and videos that describe this style and can demonstrate the poses and techniques," she says. "Since classes are constructed of the same 26 poses, people can become familiar with them beforehand."

Beginners should keep in mind that poses will require a certain level of leg, core and upper body strength, as well as balance, according to Zotos. People should also have a tolerance for stretching and moderate flexibility in their legs and spine.

"The heat factor also puts more strain on the heart and challenges endurance. That being said, people should be of good cardiovascular health; have healthy hip, knee, spine and shoulder joints; shouldn't have balance or neurological issues; and should have a general tolerance for excessive heat," she advises.

Zotos has these additional tips:

? Be well-prepared. Bring a mat and towel, and wear shorts and a tank top. If possible, bring a buddy. It can be more fun and less intimidating if you take your first class with a friend.

? Make sure you drink plenty of fluids well before class (but not coffee or soda). Don't eat anything too heavy (more than 200 calories) two to three hours prior to class.

? Make sure the studio and teachers have a good reputation. Ask about their experience and credentials. The teacher should be certified in Bikram or another form of yoga.

? Try to arrive early. This way you can introduce yourself and speak with the instructor, pick a good spot in the studio to set up your mat and get comfortable with your surroundings and the heat.

? Start slowly and learn the basics. Never push yourself to the point of pain while stretching or assuming a position.

? Listen to your body. Stop at the first sign of discomfort. If you are extremely fatigued, take a break. Do not try yoga poses beyond your experience or comfort level.

? Don't get discouraged if you can't reach a pose. It's not a competition.

? Ask questions if you're not sure how to perform a pose.

? If you get dizzy, lightheaded, overheated or experience chest pain, STOP immediately. Seek medical assistance if necessary.

Anyone who questions whether hot yoga is safe for them should consult their physician, Zotos says. "If you have sensitivity to heat, if you've ever had heat stroke or tend to get fatigued, dizzy or dehydrated quickly, you should ask your doctor before starting hot yoga. Anyone with osteoarthritis, any rheumatologic arthritis, pain in muscles or a joint, or any kind of previous injury should check with their doctor."

Zotos says it's especially important that anyone who has hypertension, low blood pressure or heart disease check with their cardiologist before trying hot yoga.

PIC: Nick Cannon Makes First Public Appearance Since Health Scare

Mariah's man is on the mend!

A healthy Nick Cannon ascended the stage at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C. Saturday night for the BET Honors -- his first public appearance since his hospitalization and surgery for "mild kidney failure."? (Cannon left an Aspen, Colo. hospital last weekend.)

PHOTOS: Celeb health scares

Carrying son Moroccan Scott, 8 months, the 31-year-old America's Got Talent host presented his wife (clad in a form-fitting nude and black gown) Mariah Carey with an entertainer award and jokingly expained why Monroe, Moroccan's twin sister, was backstage.

PHOTOS: Moroccan, Monroe, and other babies of the year

"She's a diva like her mama." Added Carey: "We were both sewn into our dresses, so she couldn't make it out."

But Cannon paid emotional tribute to his wife (a "hero," he said) for tending to him during his illness -- making him soup at 3 a.m. "when my kidneys ain't acting right."

Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' 'Sounds Very Familiar' To Madonna

'I certainly think she references me a lot in her work,' Queen of Pop tells ABC News.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P><P>There was a hot debate raging about 12 months ago when Lady Gaga dropped her song <a href="/news/articles/1657726/lady-gaga-born-this-way.jhtml">"Born This Way,"</a> with people questioning whether the song sounds too much like Madonna's 1980s hit "Express Yourself." As the discussion went viral, fans, critics and even Lady Gaga herself weighed in on it. Now, as Madge preps the release of her next album, <a href="/news/articles/1677103/madonna-album-mdna.jhtml"><i>M.D.N.A.</a>,</i> and her film "W.E.," she's <i>finally</i> weighing in on the controversy. Madonna, known for her curt, pithy responses when asked about anyone who might take a cue or two from her playbook, sat down with <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2012/01/madonna-breaks-silence-on-gaga-born-this-way-controversy-2020-exclusive-tonight/" target="_blank">ABC News</a> recently and had some choice words for pop's latest princess. "I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it's amusing and flattering and well-done," she explained of her <a href="/news/articles/1622985/lady-gaga-madonna-almost-kiss-on-saturday-night-live.jhtml">onetime "Saturday Night Live" co-star</a>. "When I heard ['Born This Way'] on the radio ... I said, 'that sounds very familiar' ... It felt reductive." <center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:717952/cp~id%3D1672718%26vid%3D717952%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A717952%26instance%3Dmtv" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></center> When asked if "reductive" was good or bad, Madonna replied, "Look it up." The Queen of Pop did call Gaga "a very talented artist" and explained that she thinks that she's making a "statement about taking something that was in the Zeitgeist, you know, 20 years ago and turning it inside out and reinterpreting it." Madonna also addressed her apparent penchant for kissing female pop stars. She recently made headlines when her <a href="/news/articles/1676052/madonna-gimme-all-your-luvin-single.jhtml">"Gimme All Your Luvin"</a> cohort Nicki Minaj tweeted that Madge had <a href="/news/articles/1675587/nicki-minaj-madonna-give-me-all-your-love.jhtml">kissed her</a> on the set of her video. In true Madonna fashion, she brushed it off, saying, "It was her birthday. I gave her a birthday kiss. No tongue!" Of course, Nicki is not the first pop star Madonna has locked lips with. Back in 2003, Madge shared kisses on the VMA stage with Britney Spears <i>and</i> Christina Aguilera. "Nice moment, good kisser. Cool," she <a href="http://idolator.com/6137151/madonna-nightline-interview-britney" target="_blank">remarked</a> of Spears. When asked if she would kiss Spears again, she replied, "No, I already did it. I don't like to repeat myself." For those who may have missed the "Nightline" interview on Thursday, it will air on Friday night (January 13) on "20/20." <center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:686557/cp~id%3D1672718%26vid%3D686557%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A686557%26instance%3Dmtv" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></center></p></p>

UK's recently arrived panda falls ill at zoo (AP)

LONDON ? One of two giant pandas on loan at a Scottish zoo has fallen ill and been removed from display.

Edinburgh Zoo officials say visitors won't see much of Yang Guang, a male panda, over the next few days because he has colic.

The animal, along with a female called Tian Tian, are the first pandas to live in Britain in nearly two decades. The pair, which are on loan from China, made a high-profile media debut in December and are expected to draw huge crowds of visitors to the zoo. Both are 8 years old.

Officials said Thursday that Yang Guang's illness wasn't serious, but can cause some discomfort and requires medication.

Britain's last giant panda, Ming Ming, lived in the London Zoo until 1994, when she was returned to China.

It's earnings versus Europe for stocks (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stock investors will return to a tug of war between signs of domestic strength and overseas concerns next week as a batch of critical earnings reports look to add credence to the idea the economy is improving, while credit rating downgrades in Europe will keep that region's difficulties in view.

Bank stocks will probably once again be a primary focus, as not only will European issues call the group's profit outlook into question, but many key names report results.

Equities have recently undergone a decoupling with respect to Europe's sovereign debt crisis as signs of progress in the euro zone, along with improving U.S. data, have pushed Wall Street higher on improved growth prospects. Financials have been a beneficiary of that rising tide, with Bank of America up 22 percent since the start of the year.

So far this month, the S&P 500 (.SPX) is up 2.5 percent, while the Dow (.DJI) is up 1.7 percent and the Nasdaq is up 4.1 percent.

"We're going to see more volatility in the weeks ahead with tension between earnings and Europe," said Christopher Sheldon, the Boston-based director of investment strategy at BNY Mellon Wealth Management, which oversees $171 billion globally.

"We want to see Europe resolved, but there will continue to be ups and downs, and while earnings will continue to be relatively good, we do expect slowing compared with 2011."

However, the uncertainty about Europe returned in a big way on Friday after Standard & Poor's downgraded the ratings of several euro-zone countries, including Italy, after the market closed. Talk of the downgrades spurred a selloff that erased most of the gains for the week, when the S&P rose for four straight sessions.

A downgrade could exacerbate the area's difficulties and bring concerns about how they might affect U.S. banks profits back to the forefront.

Still, market participants looking for signs of strength don't have to look far. Data has been bullish lately, including Friday's consumer sentiment reading at an eight-month high that sharply exceeded what was anticipated.

"The prospect of a downgrade has been around for a while, so despite today's reaction, everyone was aware of the potential, and I don't think it will be as impactful, especially as corporate business trends remain strong," said Hank Herrmann, chief executive of Waddell & Reed Financial Inc in Overland Park, Kansas.

HINTS OF BETTER TIMES AHEAD

Earnings reports from numerous bellwethers could reinforce the growth story. Bank of America Corp (BAC.N), General Electric Co (GE.N), Intel Corp (INTC.O), Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) and Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) are among the names set to report.

Early reads have supported the idea that better times lie ahead. JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) said the domestic economy was strengthening even as its profit fell 23 percent, while Alcoa Inc (AA.N) rallied earlier in the week after giving a bullish outlook for the aluminum sector.

"Banks will be an important part of the story, especially with Europe in the picture, and investors will also be looking at names like GE, which have global exposure, to see what insights can be gleaned from that," said Herrman, who helps oversee $90 billion in assets.

Next week, when markets will be closed on Monday because of the Martin Luther King holiday, will also see the release of the New York Fed's January manufacturing data, December readings on inflation from both the Producer Price Index and the Consumer Price Index, as well as December housing starts.

For the week, the Dow rose 0.5 percent while the S&P 500 gained 0.9 percent and the Nasdaq added 1.4 percent.

AT&T to bring out Nokia phone with Windows

(AP) ? AT&T on Monday said it will sell a Nokia smartphone running Microsoft's Windows Phone software. The device represents Nokia and Microsoft's best chance yet to break Apple and Google's hold on the U.S. smartphone market, the world's most lucrative.

Nokia Corp. CEO Stephen Elop joined Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer in unveiling the phone a press event in Las Vegas ahead of the International Consumer Electronics Show. The presence of both CEOs was a sign of the importance the companies place on the device.

The phone, the Lumia 900, will use AT&T Inc.'s new "LTE" wireless data network, for faster downloads. It's a slab-like touch-screen phone in the vein Apple Inc.'s iPhone. The companies said it will be available "in coming months." They didn't reveal the price.

Nokia of Finland is betting that it can reverse its sinking fortunes by switching to Microsoft's new phone software, and Microsoft is paying it billions to do so.

For Microsoft, the partnership with Nokia is a chance to break into smartphones, which are dominated by Apple and Google Inc., through its Android software. Other phone makers have also put out Windows phones, but sales have been slow.

T-Mobile USA has said it will sell a more modest Lumia model starting Jan. 11. It's the fourth-largest U.S. carrier. AT&T is the second-largest, after Verizon Wireless.

Ringtone halts NY Philharmonic performance

NEW YORK (AP) ? It's the dreaded sound at any live performance ? a ringing mobile phone.

That's what happened Tuesday night at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall during the final movement of Gustav Mahler's Ninth Symphony by the New York Philharmonic. Maestro Alan Gilbert stopped the orchestra until the phone was silenced.

The Wall Street Journal (http://on.wsj.com/xvTkcr) reports that when an iPhone's distinctive "Marimba" ringtone initially went off, Gilbert turned his head to signal his displeasure. But the ringing from the first row persisted and minutes went by.

Gilbert asked that the offending noise be turned off and finally stopped the orchestra until it was.

The Philharmonic said it was the first time the music director had ever interrupted a performance due to a mobile phone or other disruption.

Renewable fuel: Clearing a potential road block to bisabolane

ScienceDaily (Jan. 10, 2012) ? The recent discovery that bisabolane, a member of the terpene class of chemical compounds used in fragrances and flavorings, holds high promise as a biosynthetic alternative to D2 diesel fuel has generated keen interest in the green energy community and the trucking industry. Now a second team of researchers with the U.S Department of Energy (DOE)'s Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) has determined the three-dimensional crystal structure of a protein that is key to boosting the microbial-based production of bisabolane as an advanced biofuel.

The JBEI research team, led by bioengineers Paul Adams and Jay Keasling, solved the protein crystal structure of an enzyme in the Grand fir (Abies grandis) that synthesizes bisabolene, the immediate terpene precursor to bisabolane. The performance of this enzyme -- the Abies grandis ?-bisabolene synthase (AgBIS) -- when engineered into microbes, has resulted in a bottleneck that hampers the conversion by the microbes of simple sugars into bisabolene.

"Our high resolution structure of AgBIS should make it possible to design changes in the enzyme that will enable microbes to make bisabolene faster," says Adams, a leading authority on x-ray crystallography. "It should also enable us to engineer out inhibition effects that slow throughput, and perhaps also engineer the enzyme to produce other kinds of fuels similar to bisabolane."

Adams, who heads JBEI's Technologies Division, is the corresponding author of a paper describing this work in the Cell Press journal Structure. The paper is titled "Structure of a Three-Domain Sesquiterpene Synthase: A Prospective Target for Advanced Biofuels Production." Co-authoring it with Adams and Keasling were Ryan McAndrew, Pamela Peralta-Yahya, Andy DeGiovanni, Jose Pereira and Masood Hadi.

JBEI is one of three DOE Bioenergy Research Centers established by DOE's Office of Science to advance the technology for the commercial production of advanced biofuels. It is a multi-institutional partnership led by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and headquartered in Emeryville, CA.

This past fall, JBEI researchers identified bisabolane as a potential new advanced biofuel that could replace D2 diesel, today's standard fuel for diesel engines, with a clean, green, renewable alternative that's produced in the United States. Using the tools of synthetic biology, the researchers engineered strains of bacteria and yeast to produce bisabolene from simple sugars, which was then hydrogenated into bisabolane. While showing much promise, the yields of bisabolene have to be improved for microbial-based production of bisabolane fuel to be commercially viable.

"The inefficient terpene synthase enzyme is one of the bottlenecks in the metabolic pathway used by the engineered microbes," says Peralta-Yahya, a lead member of the earlier JBEI team as well as the current team. "Knowing the AgBIS crystal structure will guide us in engineering it for improved catalytic efficiency and stability, which should bring our bisabolene yields closer to economic competitiveness."

Peralta-Yahya and her colleagues determined that the AgBIS enzyme consists of three helical domains, the first three-domain structure ever found in a synthase of sesquiterpenes -- terpene compounds that contain 15 carbon atoms. The discovery of this unique structure holds importance on several fronts, as co-lead author of the Structure paper McAndrew explains.

"That we found the structure of AgBIS to be more similar to diterpene (20 carbon terpene compounds) synthases not only provides us with insight into the function of these less well characterized enzymes, it also provides us with clues to the evolutionary heritage as the archetypal three-domain terpenoid synthases became two-domain sesquiterpene synthases in plants. Furthering our knowledge of the structures and functions of terpenoid synthases may prove to have abundant practical applications aside from advanced biofuels because these enzymes produce a wide variety of specialized chemicals."

Solving the three-dimensional crystal structure of AgBIS was made possible by the protein crystallography capabilities of Berkeley Lab's Advanced Light Source (ALS), a DOE Office of Science national user facility for synchrotron radiation, and the first of the world's third generation light sources. For this work, the JBEI team used three of the five protein crystallography beamlines operated by the Berkeley Center for Structural Biology (BCSB) -- beamlines 8.2.1, 8.2.2, and 5.0.3.

"We needed to use multiple beamlines because we collected data on several crystals -- the protein by itself, and the protein with different inhibitors/cofactors," says Adams, who headed the BCSB from 2004 to 2011. "Also, the approach we used to solve the AgBIS structure required high flux tunable x-rays such as those provided at 8.2.1 and 8.2.2, which are superbend beamlines."

This research was supported by the DOE Office of Science.

EyeJot video business cards | Ubergizmo

I can imagine the many thousands of business cards that has changed hands at CES even in the first day itself. If you want to truly stand out from the rest of the crowd, why not look towards the future? EyeJot might be on to something here with the idea of a ?video business card?, known as the EyeJot vCard. This digital card will incorporate video alongside the relevant contact information that you want to share with others, posing as the next generation of business cards. With Eyejot?s video mail application, mobile users are able to create and send up to five unique digital contact cards instantaneously.

As for the kind of information that you want to include, it really depends on you, but make sure you do not throw in too much personal information that might be detrimental to your future job applications, especially when your potential employers check out drunk images of you partying on your social network. The Eyejot vCard will require mobile users to enter a contact?s email address and hit send, where an importable VCF will be created and include a QR barcode as well as link to a Google map of where contact was made for easy reference. You can download the EyeJot vCard app here.

Porter County Sheriff's Sgt. Larry LaFlower says police found the Kouts cruiser Wednesday morning "wrecked and submerged in water" in southern LaPorte County.

The suspect, 22-year-old William Francis Blankenship, wasn't with the car, which was believed to contain an undetermined number of guns, according to the Post-Tribune.

Police say Blankenship somehow escaped from the back of the vehicle and drove it away after he was arrested on drug charges in Kouts, a small Indiana town about 50 miles southeast of Chicago.

LaFlower says the officer who arrested him was the only one on duty at the time.

He didn't say if loaded guns left in the vehicle were still there.

China loan growth quickens (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China's banks ratcheted up lending in the last month of 2011 on the back of stronger money supply, reinforcing perceptions that the central bank is gently easing policy to cushion the impact of the global economic slowdown.

Chinese banks extended 640.5 billion yuan ($101.51 billion) in new loans in December, up from 562.2 billion yuan in November, data from the People's Bank of China showed on Sunday.

Annual growth in China's broad M2 money supply accelerated to 13.6 percent in December from November's 12.7 percent.

"The policy easing signal is becoming clearer," said Wang Hu, an economist at Guotai Junan Securities in Shanghai.

"We think the central bank will continue to loosen credit in the coming months."

The surge in bank lending and money supply exceeded market expectations. Analysts had expected 600 billion yuan in new loans for December and annual M2 growth of 12.7 percent in December.

Chinese policymakers have watched Europe's debt crisis with increasing alarm, but have resisted declaring an outright easing in monetary policy. Instead, they have stressed the need to "fine tune" policy, which many analysts say will mean easing of credit restrictions, particularly for small businesses.

In a separate statement on Sunday the central bank reiterated that it intended to maintain a stable monetary policy.

MORE EASING AHEAD?

The stronger-than-expected lending and money supply figures suggested that Beijing is firmly on track to unveil more pro-growth steps as inflation eases, which reduce the risk of a hard landing in the world's second-largest economy.

Contrary to its usual practice, the central bank did not release foreign exchange reserve figures along with money supply and lending data. The bank did not say when those numbers would be released.

Analysts widely expect the central bank to cut the amount of cash that banks must hold as reserves again this month as a way of pumping more loans into the economy.

Beijing cut banks' reserve requirements by half a percentage point on the last day of November, its first in three years.

The move indicated China's central bank is shifting its policy to a pro-growth model, although the central bank continues to label its policy as "prudent," which suggests it is only easing policy gradually as it wants to tame the property sector and also fears that inflation may rebound.

Chinese banks extended a total of 7.47 trillion yuan in new loans in 2011, slightly under the government's undisclosed annual target of 7.5 trillion yuan.

China's once turbo-charged economy is on track to slow for a fourth successive quarter as global demand slackened.

China's annual GDP growth in the fourth quarter may have slowed to 8.7 percent from the 9.1 percent, according to the latest Reuters poll.

Annual inflation is expected to ease to 4.0 percent in December from 4.2 percent in November, according to a poll.

Michele Bachmann Ends Her Presidential Campaign, Not Her Political Career (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Rep. Michele Bachmann, having listened to the judgment of the voters of Iowa, not to mention the gentle suggestion from her erstwhile political ally Sarah Palin, has suspended her campaign, effectively ending her quest for the presidency, according to ABC News,

Oceans of ink and bandwidth without count will doubtless be expended explaining why Bachmann, the winner of the Ames Straw Poll and the front-runner in the summer, wound up coming in sixth place in the Iowa Caucus. She had made some mistakes on the campaign trail, to be sure. But she did not have the baggage of a Newt Gingrich or the particularly crazy agenda of a Ron Paul.

In the end, Bachmann seems to have sought an office too far. People who serve in the House typically go not ascend directly to the presidency. Voters tend to want to see an intermediate step on the modern cursus honorum -- say a term or two in the Senate or a spell as governor of a state. Going from a House member straight to the office of the president is sort of like a parish priest aspiring to the papacy. It's just not done.

In a crowded field there was little reason to choose Bachmann over someone else. Conservative voters had Gingrich, Rick Perry, or Rick Santorum to choose from. Bachmann never made the case for why she should be preferred over the other three. Perry is a governor. Santorum was a senator. Gingrich was the first Republican speaker of the house in a generation and, despite all of his faults, a national political figure.

What does Bachmann do now? The next session of the Congress draws nigh and with it a chance to shine, now that she has had some national exposure. She needs to figure out what her next political move is. Does she endorse someone and if so whom? Santorum would be an obvious choice. He has the combination of fiscal and social conservatism that would be a good match. Perry and Gingrich would also benefit just a little from a nod from Bachmann.

Presuming that a Republican wins this year and wins reelection, the next national opportunity would be in 2020. Bachmann would be in her early 60s, a prime age of running again for president. But before that, a run for the Senate or governor of Minnesota should be considered. Bachmann's political career is not over.

Clinton: Housing is key to fixing nation's economy (AP)

LAS VEGAS ? Former President Bill Clinton says the key to fixing the nation's economy is to address the struggling housing market and foreclosures.

Clinton, in a speech Saturday night at the Las Vegas Anti-Defamation League's annual American Heritage Dinner, said "it's as simple" as fixing the mortgage business, cleaning up banks' books and letting "them start loaning again."

The Las Vegas Sun reports (http://bit.ly/xxJc0J ) he drew the biggest applause of the night when he addressed the issue of immigration, and the value immigrants add to the country.

Clinton urged the crowd to keep up the fight against intolerance, racism and bigotry, and stressed the importance of not letting differences lead to hate.

Among those in attendance was Democratic Rep. Shelley Berkley of Nevada, who's challenging Republican U.S. Sen. Dean Heller.

MAYOR TED GATSAS: ROMNEY WILL MAKE THIS AN AMERICAN CENTURY

Boston, MA ? Manchester Mayor Ted Gatsas made the following statement on tonight?s debate:

?Mitt Romney won tonight?s debate by clearly outlining his plans to turn around our economy. On the issues most important to Granite Staters ? jobs, spending and taxes ? there is no other candidate voters can trust more than Mitt Romney. His vision for limited government, balanced budgets, and low taxes stands in stark contrast to President Obama?s abysmal economic policies. After three years of fiscal mismanagement, Granite Staters are looking for a new leader who can undo the damage caused by the Obama Administration?s failed agenda. That leader is Mitt Romney.?

Turkey's custody laws draw flak after general held (Reuters)

ISTANBUL (Reuters) ? A day after the jailing of Turkey's former military chief, pending possible trial on accusations he tried to overthrow the government, newspaper columnists criticized the authorities for failing to reform sweeping pre-trial custody laws.

An Istanbul court sent shockwaves through Turkey by sending General Ilker Basbug to Silivri prison, west of Istanbul, on Friday. The prosecution has yet to lay formal charges against the man who was chief of staff from 2008 to 2010.

While pro-government newspapers hailed the decision as a triumph for democracy, demonstrating no one was above the law, other commentators said his imprisonment highlighted a need for legal reform to rein in powers to arrest and detain.

Mustafa Aykol, a writer often cited as sympathetic to the ruling AK Party, said the penal code referring to "helping a terrorist organization" risked being used to criminalize an ideology.

"Turkey's arresting machine, as it has always done, can easily put suspects in prison for years, for accusations that sometimes look very overblown," he wrote in the Hurriyet Daily News in a commentary headlined "Turkey's arresting machine gone mad."

Basbug is accused of involvement in the spread of negative propaganda on websites against Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's government, which swept to power in 2002 and won a third term last June with 50 percent of the vote.

Tensions between the staunchly secularist military and the Islamist-rooted AK Party are long-held, though the party shuns the Islamist label and calls itself socially conservative.

Some 58 serving and 81 retired generals and admirals are in custody, suspected of involvement in plots against Erdogan's government.

Basbug is also accused of having ties with an ultra-nationalist network dubbed "Ergenekon," that police said they discovered in 2007.

Mehmet Ali Birand, one of Turkey's leading columnists, said the case against Basbug was implausible and his jailing provided further evidence of an unjust system.

"We shall never break this vicious cycle unless the disgraceful practice of arresting, pending trial, comes to an end, he wrote in Hurriyet.

"The parties responsible for this freak show are none other than political authorities who just don't want to fix the situation."

GOVERNMENT LOOKING AT LAWS

Some critics say the government has used the probe to silence opposition and cow the military.

The government denies any such a motive but Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay said Friday that the government had taken note of the criticism.

Hundreds of people, including retired and serving military officers, journalists, academics and lawyers, have been detained since 2007 under the widening Ergenekon investigation. Many have yet to face trial.

Atalay said new regulations governing custody orders and arrests may be introduced along with measures to speed up the judicial process.

Basbug's lawyer is expected to appeal in the coming days against the court's order that the general be remanded in custody while the prosecution builds its case.

Some observers point out that Basbug is hardly a flight risk given he is well known, nor could he interfere with the investigation - one reason for remanding suspects in custody - as the probe goes back to 2008.

In the past the military, which overthrew four governments between 1960 and 1997, could count on support from senior judges until Erdogan introduced reforms in 2010 that changed the way judges were selected.

Ahmet Altan, the editor of Taraf, regarded as an anti-military newspaper that has broken many of the Ergenekon stories, suspected the ruling party had its own motives in being reluctant to reform legal processes.

"The AK Party has the opportunity and power to change this country, to set up a new system, and the reason why it's not doing so is because it enjoys the amazing power offered by the darkness."

Amazing photos show space station crossing moon

Two photographers have snapped spectacular portraits of the International Space Station streaking across the night sky, catching the orbiting lab crossing the moon and slipping by Jupiter.

In one series of photos, NASA photographer Lauren Harnett captured images of the moon at the exact moment that the space station passed across its face in what scientists call a "transit."

Harnett took the photos on Jan. 4 from NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. She then combined several images into a composite view that shows the space station just before and after it crossed the moon's disk.

"She had to struggle with a window of visibility limited by fog and clouds, and I think she got some excellent results," said NASA spokesman Mike Gentry at the space center. [ See the space station and moon photos ]

The International Space Station is the largest spacecraft ever built, with a main truss that is longer than a football field. ?It is currently home to six men (three Russians, two Americans and a Dutch astronaut) and flies 240 miles above Earth at a speed of about 17,500 mph.

At its brightest, the space station can outshine the planet Venus and be easily spotted with the unaided eye by skywatchers who know where to look.

"The space station can be seen in the night sky with the naked eye, and a pair of field binoculars may reveal some detail of the structural shape of the spacecraft," NASA officials explained in an image description.

In Harnett's photos, the moon appears in crystal-clear detail, and the shape of the space station's huge solar arrays and backbone-like main truss can be recognized.

Harnett was not the only one to photograph the space station this week.

On Thursday, photographer Mike Killian spotted the space station from central Florida as it passed near the bright planet Jupiter.

The space station "made a six-minute pass over central FL last night," Killian told SPACE.com in an email. "Viewing conditions were perfect."

There are several websites that can help amateur and seasoned skywatchers alike prepare for a night of space station and satellite observing.

Another good site is this one, which provides real-time satellite tracking and shows at any given moment during the day or night where over Earth the space station or shuttle happen to be.????

The International Space Station is not the only satellite that can be spotted by the unaided eye. Other bright satellites, such as China's Tiangong 1 space laboratory, can be seen from the Earth without telescopes (as could NASA's space shuttles, before they were retired in 2011).

And seeing satellites from Earth is not a one-time event. The International Space Station, for example, has been orbiting Earth since 1998 and completes one trip around the planet every 90 minutes.

"It's certainly not something that's limited to happening just a few times a year," Gentry said.
