Scientists unravel mystery of pigeon GPS ability (+video)

Scientists have detected special nerve cells in pigeons' brains that can detect the intensity and direction of magnetic fields.

The next time someone calls you bird-brained, you should assume that you are being complimented on your sense of direction.

Skip to next paragraph We've always known that pigeons have a good internal compass?and now we have the brain cells to prove it.

Pigeons, in particular, are known for their innate homing ability, having been used as messengers since ancient times. We know that pigeons have some kind of internal magnetic compass,?but exactly what it is and how it works has remained a mystery.

Now scientists are?one step closer to decoding the birds' magnetic sense. Writing in the journal Science,?Le-Qing Wu and J. David Dickman at Baylor College of Medicine described what happened when they put seven pigeons in an artificial magnetic field and observed their brains.

Wu and Dickman put the pigeons in a completely dark room, clamped their heads in place, connected their brain stems to electrodes, and used a Tesla coil to cancel out the effects of the Earth's magnetic field and to induce a new one. Then they fiddled with the angle and the intensity of the magnetic field and watched which parts of the pigeons' brains lit up.

Ultimately, Wu and Dickman identified 53 neurons in the pigeons' brain stems that responded to magnetic stimuli.?

"The cells responded to the angle and intensity of the magnetic field. Some cells were more sensitive depending on what direction we aimed the magnetic field around the bird?s head," Dickman said in a Baylor press release.

Of course, being able to tell which way is north is not the same thing as knowing your position on the globe. (If you doubt this, have a friend blindfold you and drop you in a boat in the middle of the ocean with just a compass. You'll quickly realize that, Even though you can determine your bearing,?you still have no idea where you are. You'll also realize that you need better friends.)?

Pigeons seem to have both an internal compass and an internal map. Dickman and his colleagues believe that pigeons encode the information from these magnetically attuned nerve cells to spatial maps in the memory centers of their brains.

"Birds give us a unique opportunity to study how the brain develops these spatial maps and the receptors that feed into it because they have such a great ability to navigate," said?Dickman in the press release.?

Senior EPA official resigns over 'crucify' comments

By Miguel Llanos, msnbc.com

Saying he had become a distraction, a senior Environmental Protection Agency official who used the word "crucify" to describe how the EPA enforced laws?in the oil industry?resigned on Monday.

"My continued service will distract you and the agency," Al Armendariz said in his resignation letter to EPA chief Lisa Jackson.

"I?regret comments I made several years ago that do not in any way reflect my work as regional administrator,"?Armendariz said in his letter.

Armendariz, who?was head of the EPA's South Central office, came under?fire from Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., who was informed of?the two-year-old video last week and launched an inquiry.

Inhofe on Monday welcomed the resignation but said the EPA's "crucifixion philosophy" continues.

"His choice of words revealed the truth about the war that EPA has been waging on American energy producers under President Obama," Inhofe said in a statement.

The EPA, in response to a request?from msnbc.com, said that Jackson had accepted the resignation. "I respect the difficult decision he made and his wish to avoid distracting from the important work of the agency,"?Jackson said in a statement.

In the video,?Armendariz answers a question about enforcement policies. In the Middle Ages, he?told the audience, the Romans?conquered a village by taking "the first five guys they saw and they'd crucify them."

He added that the EPA, similarly, makes "examples out of people who are not complying with the law ... you make examples out of them, use it as a deterrent method.

"Companies that are smart see that and they don't want to play that, and they decide at that point that it's time to clean up," he added.

Armendariz had been speaking to residents of Dish, Texas, a town where some are concerned about potential environmental impacts from a drilling technique called hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

A senior Obama administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject, told The Associated Press that Armendariz has received death threats since the video surfaced.

16th Annual Webby Award Winners: The Complete List

The 16th annual Webby Awards are upon us, and Mashable has an exclusive list of all the winners.

Considered by many to be the Internet's Academy Awards, the Webbys honors online media in four categories: websites; interactive advertising and media; online film and video; and mobile and apps.

Each category awards two prizes -- the Webby Award, which is chosen by the International Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Webby People's Voice Award, which is chosen by the public in an online voting system. A record 1.5 million people voted online this year.

Some of this year's notable wins include Pinterest, Spotify and Google+ -- all first-time winners -- as well as Facebook, which beat out Twitter, Kiva, YouTube and Change.org in the category of "People's Special Achievement Webby for Social Change."

This year marks the first time the award is being given to honor the Internet as a driving force in advancing and organizing societies around the world.

Another 2012 Webby highlight is Instagram, which is being honored as the "Webby Breakout of the Year" in light of its billion dollar acquisition by Facebook.

Icelandic singer-songwriter Bjork is receiving recognition for her album Biophilia, which incorporated touchscreen technology in a multi-dimensional, digital album.

Juliette Lewis and Graydon Sheppard are both receiving special "Best Actresses" awards for their wildly popular YouTube series "Sh*t Girls Say."

Mashable is humbled to receive the Webby Award in the "Best Blog - Business" category.

Jack White's Blunderbuss: The Spruce Goose Soars Again

With a solo debut set to debut at #1, Bigger Than the Sound wonders if ever-eccentric White has become his own worst enemy.
By James Montgomery

This week, Jack White will top the charts in both the U.S. and the U.K. with his side-winding solo album Blunderbuss, a high-water mark for eccentric millionaires not matched since Kim Dotcom decided to become the world's #1 "Modern Warfare 3" player, shot an elaborate time-lapse video of him playing the game — with bonus techno soundtrack — then had a cake made to commemorate the achievement.

Of course, I do not know if White is actually a millionaire, though, in a recent New York Times Magazine piece about him, we learned he owns several taxidermied animals (including a Himalayan tahr), drives a black Mercedes and a 1960 Ford Thunderbird, hands out business cards that identify him as John A. White III, D.D.S. - Accidentist and Occidental Archaeologist, maintains a temperature-controlled vault with a biometric scanner, had microphones installed in the eaves of his mansion so he can listen to the rain while he sleeps, and smokes Al Capone cigarillos. But I do know he is most certainly eccentric, downright crazy even. It is what I love about him ... and unfortunately, it may also lead to his downfall.

Then again, it probably won't. All I'm suggesting is that, given everything you've just learned about him — and previous achievements in eccentricity like launching 1,000 helium balloons from his Nashville warehouse, touring every province in Canada merely for the sake of wearing a kilt, color-coordinating everything in his life and scoring the "Lone Ranger" movie — it's not exactly a stretch to call White the rock and roll Howard Hughes (he would definitely build a flying boat out of wood). And you're probably aware how things turned out for that guy.

I am not sure if it is possible for White to dial things back a touch. I'm not even sure I want him to. Music needs eccentric millionaires, after all, and Kanye can't shoulder the load alone. And I realize that the reverence with which White treats the most minute of details (and the endless array of odd projects he embarks on) only make him, well, him.

To his credit, he never lets these things interfere with his musical output — in fact, they only add to it — but I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps White is too eccentric? Not, like, "watching 'Ice Station Zebra' 150 times and stacking Kleenex boxes" eccentric (à la Hughes), but now that I think of it, that doesn't seem like much of a stretch. I could definitely see him withdrawing from the public eye one day, holing up in his Nashville estate and retiring from music to focus on welding. (Bob Dylan would bring his torches on by, of course.) That probably won't happen either, but it would definitely be a shame and, hey, you never know.

Mostly, though, I'm worried that perhaps White's various eccentricities will eventually detract from his music (and come to think of it, this column doesn't really help in that regard). I definitely don't want to see him turn into Axl Rose, a man whose, uh, foibles have become more noteworthy than the music he makes. White's not gonna put his hair in cornrows or anything, but he does run the risk of perhaps becoming better known for the crazy stuff he does on the side than for his full-time job as a totally kick-ass rock paragon. And that would be the biggest shame of all.

So, Jack, don't get me wrong; I'm not asking you to change — I'd never do that in a million years. I love Blunderbuss and am genuinely happy it'll be the #1 album in this country (because, really, there's only so much I can write about Adele or Lionel Richie). You are fantastic and unique and a genuine national treasure. But maybe just tone the crazy down a few notches? I don't want to see it overshadow your true talents and I definitely don't want to see you become a germ-obsessed recluse. Perhaps sell the stuffed tahr or donate the biometric scanner to a charity of your choice. Oh, and go outside every once in a while. You're beginning to look translucent.

You can still be you, of course. I want you to be nothing less ... OK, maybe a little less. But for your own good.

Should Jack White tone it down for his own good? Sound off on this week's Bigger Than the Sound in the comments below!
